Former Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski is interested in taking over for fired Mike Shanahan as the head coach of the Denver Broncos. He recently sent a 30-page PowerPoint presentation to the Broncos, detailing why he should be hired. His credentials include a season as the defensive coordinator for the Piedmont High Freshman team last year, and... well, a career that spanned 16 years in the NFL and stretched (and broke) rules and fingers throughout the league. Romanowski openly admitted in his book, "My Life On The Edge", that he used steroids, played dirty and, as the title insinuated, walked the line on every rule possible, doing as much as he could without getting caught.
He admitted to taking THG, experimenting with HGH, and intentionally breaking David Meggett's finger during a game.
An excerpt from Romanowski's book:
"When I was at the bottom of the pile after another play in the same game, and I reached to rip the football out of the hand of Giants running back Dave Meggett, all I could get a good grip on was his finger. So I just grabbed it and crrraaaccckkk. Broke It Like a chicken bone. I could hear him scream in agony."
When asked about it on 60 Minutes, he clarified it. Not that the story changed. He just elaborated a bit.
Bill Romanowski: I'm pissed. And I'm down there just trying to rip that ball out of his hands, and all I could get was a finger. And, at that time, I thought it was his, but just, whatever it was, just, I just snapped it. And I could hear a scream at the bottom of the pile.
Scott Pelley: You broke his finger, and you though to yourself, good, he's not going to be so effective anymore.
BR: At that time, yes.
SP: Man, that's cold.
BR: It's awful.
Wow. While it sounds like Romanowski has cleaned up his act quite a bit, and is genuinely sorry for being arguably the dirtiest player in NFL history, it would still be quite a shock if the Broncos even took him seriously. He was Rodney Harrison times 10, but less of a nice guy off the field. He was a guy who didn't know where to draw the line, and was not above fighting a teammate, even. That's not the kind of guy I would want coaching my team.
It's probably best for Romanowski to keep away from competition of any kind... probably for the rest of his life. While I admire his desire to win, it's clear that he was never able to keep his will to win in check, and habitually broke (or bent) the rules in his effort to come out on top. I can't imagine a Bill Romanowski coaching campaign going well at all. Fortunately, the Broncos will likely have the chance to hire whoever they want, so they won't have to stoop to this. Nor should they.
