Shouldn't all college football coaches be labeled as "interim?" Well, except Joe Paterno. He'll coach from his grave. Anyways ...Following West Virginia rout of Oklahoma, the Mountaineers have hired previously interim coach Bill Stewart to replace Rich Rodriguez.
Uh oh. I don't like this. Can we all agree some of our worst decisions have been made by emotional overreactions? Maybe some of the best, too, but I think WVU overreacted in this case. Stability is nice, he seems like a good guy, and his job interview last night was a wild success.
Perhaps I'm just jaded from my own experience with "a player's coach." After Nick Saban left Michigan State for LSU prior to the Citrus Bowl, Bobby Williams was put in charge of game preparation for Florida. The Spartans played passionately in an upset of the Gators, and with the team's ringing endorsement he was named head coach following the game. The Williams era was filled with a lack of discipline on and off the field. But hey, the players loved him.
Bold move by 'Eers for another, more important reason. Rich Rodriguez was set to bring all his assistants with him to Michigan. Now the new Michigan man may be sitting in Ann Arbor by himself, after he already cleaned house in the Wolverine football office. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.
