Bill Stewart Has Interim Tag Dropped, Named West Virginia's Next Head Coach
Shouldn't all college football coaches be labeled as "interim?" Well, except Joe Paterno. He'll coach from his grave. Anyways ...

Following West Virginia rout of Oklahoma, the Mountaineers have hired previously interim coach Bill Stewart to replace Rich Rodriguez.

Uh oh. I don't like this. Can we all agree some of our worst decisions have been made by emotional overreactions? Maybe some of the best, too, but I think WVU overreacted in this case. Stability is nice, he seems like a good guy, and his job interview last night was a wild success.

Perhaps I'm just jaded from my own experience with "a player's coach." After Nick Saban left Michigan State for LSU prior to the Citrus Bowl, Bobby Williams was put in charge of game preparation for Florida. The Spartans played passionately in an upset of the Gators, and with the team's ringing endorsement he was named head coach following the game. The Williams era was filled with a lack of discipline on and off the field. But hey, the players loved him.

Bold move by 'Eers for another, more important reason. Rich Rodriguez was set to bring all his assistants with him to Michigan. Now the new Michigan man may be sitting in Ann Arbor by himself, after he already cleaned house in the Wolverine football office. Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

What do you think of the hire?

Based on the endorsement that he got from White and Schmitt and they way that they played against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, I can understand why.

I can see why they did it as well, but I agree that it smells a lot like MSU's situation with BW.  I think the guy seems like a stand-up individual, so I wish him luck, but I'm not overly optimistic about his chances.

He is in a great situation though.  He gets Pat White and Noel Devine next year, and probably Steve Slaton as well.  If he can recruit, he'll be fine.  I think this is different because he's inheriting a better situation than what was left at MSU.

I definitely think he'll have a better record than Rich Rodriguez in his first season, but long term he doesn't seem to have a whole lot of experience. We'll see, definitely rooting for a good guy and uknown to succeed. Probably a better X and O's coach than Stoops.

Recruiting will be the key for Stewart.  He definitely has the support of the players that are currently on the team.  He's been at WV since 2000, so he knows the system.  Prior to that, he was an OC in the CFL for 2 years.  He just doesn't have the experience as the HC.    I really hope that he does well.

I agree with him having a better record than Rich Rodriguez next year.  Speaking of next year, how crazy is that going to be? USC, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, and Illinois (sure I missed some others) all should be better next year.

I have confidence in Coach Stew.  These kids love him and those that saw him on TV saw how his team rallied around him.
