The Buffalo Bills signed five free agents – defensive ends Jamie Blatnick and Kourtnei Brown, kicker Chris Koepplin, punter Brian Stahovich as well as fullback Frank Summers to undisclosed deals on Thursday. All five players participated in the Buffalo Bills’ veteran minicamp as they hosted six other free agents on tryout basis this week.
Perhaps the most intriguing signing of them all is Frank Summers, who is the only player of the lot that has played an NFL down. Frank Summers is also listed as the only true fullback on the Buffalo Bills’ roster. Without any serious competition at the moment, Frank Summers has a legitimate shot at making the Buffalo Bills’ final roster.
Joining the league as a fifth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2009 NFL draft, Frank Summers predominantly spent his rookie season on the team’s injured reserve and the following season on the practice squad. Frank Summers also spent part of the 2011 season on the San Diego Chargers practice squad. The 5-9, 248-pound Frank Summers registered 1,668 rushing yards on 385 carries and two touchdowns, while adding 36 receptions for 402 yard and six touchdowns, during his two years at UNLV.
The other four players may have a harder time competing for a roster spot.
Entering the league as an undrafted free agent nearly a year ago, Jamie Blatnick spent part of 2012 on the Denver Broncos practice squad but was released ahead of the regular season. The 6-3, 253-pound Jamie Blatnick totaled 118 tackles, 24 stops for a loss and 16.0 sacks while playing 51 games for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Kourtnei Brown signed with the San Francisco 49ers after going undrafted in the 2012 NFL draft. The 6-4, 253-pound Kourtnei Brown was released ahead of the regular season and also spent part of last season on the Washington Redskins practice squad.  Kourtnei Brown totaled 75 tackles and 3.0 sacks in 49 games at Clemson.
The 5-11, 197-pound Brian Stahovich was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2012, before being released ahead of the regular season. The former Aztec punter booted 246 punts for a 42.9 average at San Diego State.
Meanwhile, Chris Koepplin, who signed onto the New England Patriots’ roster as a free agent in 2011, was released prior to the regular season and rejoined the team next April. The 6-3, 210-pound University of Massachusetts product previously also played two years in Arena League 2 (2008-09) for the Manchester Wolves.
Following the new additions, the Buffalo Bills have 70 players on the roster, as the aim for the maximum 90 limit set for offseason.
