Hosting the Olympic Games are not something a city should take lightly. It requires a ton of work, a ton of preparation, and a ton of money. But hey, that can always be taken care of by someone well down the road, right?
Well, yes. And that's exactly what Birmingham, Alabama mayor Larry Langford seems to be thinking, if he's even thinking at all.
Langford wants Birmingham to host the 2020 Olympic Games. If you just spit out your late morning coffee, I totally understand. After all, Birmingham couldn't even handle a pro sports team right now.
Langford's rationale is about what you'd expect too, as in there is no rationale in it at all.
"Why not Birmingham? -- that's my question."It would take me too long to answer that, so why don't we just move along. So how exactly is this going to be done, Larry?
By 2020, as the mayor sees it, all the city projects currently envisioned, including an indoor track and Olympic-sized swimming facilities at Fair Park and a domed stadium would be completed.See, the real beauty of a 12-year planning period is you can make up whatever the hell scenario you want. Flying cars? You betcha! Teleportation devices that send athletes from their home country to the Olympics in the blink of an eye? Of course! Me actually taking Birmingham seriously? No, that'll never happen.
"That's the beauty of a 12-year planning period," Langford said.
This city would have to build literally everything for the Olympics from the ground up.
Anyway, Langford is putting together a committee to waste taxpayers money as we speak, so hooray for that.
Good luck Birmingham. Although if I were you, I would aim to get the Olympics by, oh, I'd say never.
