Oct 6, 2012; Detroit, MI, USA; Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin (6) talks to the media before game one of the 2012 ALDS against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Mandatory Credit: Tim Fuller-US PRESSWIREBob Melvin and Buck Showalter took all of the 1st and 2nd place votes for AL Manager of the year, with Melvin edging out Showalter by a few votes to take the win.

Melvin received 16 of 28 first place votes, and Showalter received the other 12.

Melvin's Oakland Athletics won the AL West with a 94-68 record, despite very low expectations at the beginning of the season.

Showalter's Orioles were similar, winning the wild card with a 93-69 record, finishing 2nd in the highly competitive AL East, where they were predicted to finish 4th or 5th.

Personally, I believe Showalter should have won the award, but Melvin was certainly an excellent choice as well.

Robin Ventura, Joe Maddon, Joe Girardi, Jim Leyland and Ron Washington split the 3rd place votes.

Congrats to Bob Melvin and the Athletics for an excellent season, and the Manager of the Year award.
