Shocking, and very sad news that Bobby Knight has abruptly resigned as head coach of Texas Tech tonight. One of my favorite coaches in any sport, all-time, and based on my personal experience with him you might not think that'd be the case.
Back in 1993, a really short, not so quick kid with a huge afro that relied solely on a deadly jump shot attended Bobby Knight's basketball camp. The General didn't do a whole lot of coaching during the week, other than a daily speech that went about how you'd imagine. Occasionally though, he'd wander around watching the scrimmages and pick his spots. Speaking of picks, I made the mistake of failing to screen away (essential to his motion offense) after starting the offense. It was the last time in my life that I've ever failed to set a pick. Regardless of the fact that I was never going to be a potential Hoosier, Bobby Knight took the time to make me feel even smaller, but I can safely say I was significantly better basketball player when I left Bloomington.
I do love Knight for that reason, but what I'll ultimately remember him for is, of course, his sideline antics and press room banter. He'll always be tied to the chair throwing incident, but here's a few other gems:
Of those f-ing not included above, here's a f-ing few more:
1993 Tournament: Bobby turns a water glass into a genie to read the future.
The infamous "Calbert Cheney whipping incident." Unfortunately embedding is disabled, but I highly recommend going to the 3:50 mark of the video. Here's the shot that appeared in a local paper of Knight whipping Cheney, which not so surprisingly got the NAACP a little upset.
Classic Knight. Here's a few others that are disabled. Bob discusses the purpose of the press, and a great exchange with a reporter discussing Albert Pujols.
Back to more clips. Here's a run-of-the-mill exchange with some reporters after a loss to Missouri. Run-of-the-mill by Knight's standards, of course.
Bobby attempting to golf (not safe to play at full volume at work)
Bobby goes all Chris Berman on his Hoosiers TV show (once again, not safe at high volume if you're at work)
Bringing his grandson to the press conference from a few weeks ago.
No list would be complete without Keith Smart's jump shot, truly one of Knight's finest moments. He wasn't just a soundbite.
If this is indeed the end for Bobby Knight, he'll sorely be missed.
