It came down to the very last lap in last night's Craftsman Truck Series season finale. Kyle Busch led the most laps...surprise, surprise! The Shrub didn't lead the money lap though, but still finished in 4th position. Meanwhile rookie Brian Scott led some laps and finished second. The race went into overtime, 137 laps was the final distance. In the 2-lap shootout, it was Tood Bodine holding off the rookie for the win. Bodine finished the season a distant 3rd in the final points standings, but ended the season on a great note with a trip to victory lane.
So Bodine won the race, but who won the war? Only three points separated Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday heading into this race. Both earned 5 bonus points for leading a lap. Both ran well all night. Last week, both drivers found trouble, and Hornaday finished one position ahead of Benson. Last night, neither driver ran into trouble, but they both finished right next to each other again. However, this time, it was Benson finishing one position ahead of Hornaday, 7th for Benson and 8th for Hornaday respectively. That's a difference of 4 points. So when the checkered flag fell, it was Johnny Benson capturing his first Truck Series title by just seven points over defending series champion Ron Hornaday.
Congratulations to Benson and Hornaday for giving us a season full of suspense and excitement. These two went back and forth all year, but in the end, it was Benson who got the last laugh.
Next year, Camping World takes over as the title sponsor of the Truck Series, but Benson and Hornaday gave Craftsman a grand finale that will be remembered for years to come!
