But you know the saying you can't keep a good man down? Apparently you can't keep down 'roided up sluggers who are still extremely productive either.
The David Ortiz injury for the Red Sox has provided quite an opportunity for Bonds, and while this is all clearly just speculation right now, there are rumblings all over baseball that the Sox either should, or may, sign Bonds.
It's still not known how long Ortiz could be out for. It could be a month, it could be the rest of the season.
But the truth is that Ortiz's bat needs to be replaced in some way. He's too critical a component of the Sox's offense, and there's no one the Sox currently have who can fill the void. You also have to figure that Theo Epstein would prefer not to trade away young talent for a temporary fix.
Bonds could be signed for extremely cheap money, as he has no other options, and if he's anything like he was in his last season in SF, he'd clearly be a decent replacement for Ortiz.
The question here is do the Red Sox want to do the "right" thing, as in not sign Bonds.
As many of you probably know, I'm a Bonds apologist. But that said, this is almost too perfect for the Red Sox. It seems dumb NOT to make this move if Ortiz really is going to be out for an extended period of time. Also, let's remember that Sox fans will really only care about something like signing Bonds for a brief time period.
Besides, something tells me that if the season progresses, and the Rays remain in first in the AL East, Sox fans are not going to be real understanding if Red Sox management says to them "But at least we didn't sign Bonds."
If you're a fan of "clean" baseball - which doesn't exist - then a Bonds return is obviously something you don't want to see. But remember, the bottom line in sports is winning. It's why guys like Pacman Jones still have a job.
That's probably not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. So if I'm the Red Sox, and I know Ortiz will be out a long time, I make this move. I know the fans care more about winning than they do steroids anyway. It's always been that way, and it isn't going to change.
