Bonds To The Red Sox?
There May Just Be A Job Available For Barry Bonds
It seemed just about a month ago that all was lost for Barry Bonds. His career seemed to be officially over, and it also appeared that MLB and fans were more than happy to move on and never think of him again.

But you know the saying you can't keep a good man down? Apparently you can't keep down 'roided up sluggers who are still extremely productive either.

The David Ortiz injury for the Red Sox has provided quite an opportunity for Bonds, and while this is all clearly just speculation right now, there are rumblings all over baseball that the Sox either should, or may, sign Bonds.

It's still not known how long Ortiz could be out for. It could be a month, it could be the rest of the season.

But the truth is that Ortiz's bat needs to be replaced in some way. He's too critical a component of the Sox's offense, and there's no one the Sox currently have who can fill the void. You also have to figure that Theo Epstein would prefer not to trade away young talent for a temporary fix.

Bonds could be signed for extremely cheap money, as he has no other options, and if he's anything like he was in his last season in SF, he'd clearly be a decent replacement for Ortiz.

The question here is do the Red Sox want to do the "right" thing, as in not sign Bonds.

As many of you probably know, I'm a Bonds apologist. But that said, this is almost too perfect for the Red Sox. It seems dumb NOT to make this move if Ortiz really is going to be out for an extended period of time. Also, let's remember that Sox fans will really only care about something like signing Bonds for a brief time period.

Besides, something tells me that if the season progresses, and the Rays remain in first in the AL East, Sox fans are not going to be real understanding if Red Sox management says to them "But at least we didn't sign Bonds."

If you're a fan of "clean" baseball - which doesn't exist - then a Bonds return is obviously something you don't want to see. But remember, the bottom line in sports is winning. It's why guys like Pacman Jones still have a job.

That's probably not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. So if I'm the Red Sox, and I know Ortiz will be out a long time, I make this move. I know the fans care more about winning than they do steroids anyway. It's always been that way, and it isn't going to change.

I'd rather see Coco Crisp or Sean Casey get some more AB's, or... well... just about anything...

Plus, there's a chance that Ortiz may only be out for a couple weeks. I wouldn't risk a clubhouse cancer like Bonds... after all, it's only the Rays... I wouldn't be shocked to see them come back down to Earth soon.

Ok, I'll be the first to say it.  I don't care enough about winning to sign this walking piece of excrement.  Steroids aside, Bonds is a 44 year old man with two balky knees, a clubhouse cancer, a racist, and has nothing to offer the Red Sox or any other franchise that outweighs the baggage he brings.  He's the polar opposite of the team's entire philosophy.  He is DONE.

The Red Sox have an extremely deep farm system now.  If Ortiz is to be out longer than a month or so, they could trade for a bat if necessary.

I don't know if I'd say he's racist... but I WOULD say that if he were white, then he'd be accused of racism, with some of his remarks. And in Ron Kittle's book, Kittle claims that Bonds told him he "doesn't sign for white people", when he was asked to sign some items that would later be auctioned off for cancer research.

The bottom line is... he's been a clubhouse cancer since at LEAST his college days at ASU... and most likely, with the way his father condoned his BS, I'm sure he was no prize even in his little league days. His skills are declining, he hasn't stepped on a field against MLB caliber players in over 9 months, and he's the poster boy for everything that is wrong with baseball.

The Sox don't NEED him at all. They can win without him. And they WILL win without him.

As a die-hard White Sox fan it is tough to trust much of anything Kittle has done, unless it is to strike out or butcher a fly ball. Not to say what he wrote is not true, but I am just saying.

But it is true he is a locker room cancer and the Red Sox don't need him.

Funny, as I watched SportsCenter last night, and saw Big Popi with the "big owie", I thought of Bonds.    It would not surprise me if Boston did that, though I'd say the odds are 75-25 against it happening.

Personally, I'm surprised that Bonds hasn't ended up with the Yankees yet; that right-field porch is about 20 paces outside of the infield dirt at Yankee stadium - Bonds could've hit close to 100 HR's instead of 'just' 73 !!      And, if ANY team would go after him, it would be the Yanks !

Yeah.....Kittle wasn't / isn't the most beloved White Sox / ex-White-Sox player out there !!

Like him or not, Bonds will hit over .300, draw a butt-ton of walks (putting him on base) and could very possibly hit 20 homeruns.  It's not a good idea if Ortiz can come back in a reasonable amount of time, but it's a great idea if he's going to need surgury.  Above everything else Bonds wants a ring to give some relevence to his career and he realizes that he needs the Red Sox exponentially more than the Sox need him.  I'm sure he'd be a good boy for the 4-5 months he'd be around the team.

On top of that, the minute the Sox sign him to a 1-yr deal the fickle "Red Sox Nation" will fall in love with the guy.

Me too, I thought the rule was that you had to be able to read a book before writing one.

I'd love to see Bonds back in baseball whether it be with BoSox or any other team. Attitude aside, the A's of the '70's won three championships in a row and they HATED each other.

Barry Bonds would be a league leader (top ten) in a bunch of key offensive categories.  Steroids saga is over, and he could 30 more HR this year if he's healthy-on the DL, he could hit 35.  Bonds is not that bad a guy, and he's definitely not racist.

I think he is a 50+ HR hitter in the AL

Which articles or quotes do you want me to start with?  The one where he said all white people wanted Babe Ruth to be the HR king forever?  Maybe the one where he said he was getting all this scrutiny not because he's a cheat and a liar, but because he was black (despite the fact the all-time home run leader before him was also black, so that's irrelevant).  Or the time he said he needed to get all the money he could because as a black man the white man was trying to take it from him.

Maybe the time he said Boston was full of racist white people despite never playing a game there at the time of his comment? And of course the quote most attributed to him from Game of Shadows, stating that he was going to take down (and I'm paraphrasing) "Mark McGwire and all those white boys".

Anyway at the end of the day it doesn't matter what he said, what color he is, what drugs he was allegedly on, or any of that.  The fact is he's 44 years old on two surgically repaired knees and there is no guarantee he'd be "a league leader in a bunch of key offensive categories."

Using last year's stats, he would bea league leader, and that's based on an NL season where he had to play in the field and sat out games.

Game of Shadows quote-you paraphrased a paraphrasing author from an unconfirmed source.

The record- Look at the difference between Clemens and Bonds, and the way they've been treated.  Imagine if Clemens was playing right now, would he be a sports media punching bag, the way Bonds was?  Everywhere he went, would he be tormented, boo'd, and harassed to the extent Bonds was? I don't picture fans doing that to Clemens like they did to Bonds.  I would estimate that in their lifetime, Bonds will be called a cheater 100X more times than Clemens ever will.

Clemens is not only being accused of cheating, but is also being accused of adultery and potentially statuatory rape.  You consider this better than Bonds' treatment?

Clemens is only fortunate that this info came out after his career was basically over.  Bonds has been an active player for years since the scandal broke, while pursuing one of the most coveted records in baseball, almost in defiance of MLB.

Color me torn.  Being from Pittsburgh, I despise the bastard.  Being a diehard Red Sox fan, how could it hurt?  I could care less about steroids(more pitchers have been busted for it than sluggers), but my hatred of Bonds personality = my admiration of him as the best hitter of all time.

Amen to that.  Then again the rest of the world though we all believed in the "Curse of the Bambino".  Nobody within.. hell.. a six hour drive of Boston believed in that.

Unless you're in Bristol, Connecticut.

Trade Ortiz? You've gotta be kidding me...

Agreed. +1

The truth is the Giants got every last dollar they could out of Bonds to fill that ballpark they had to privately finance.  Once Bonds broke the record, and the fact he could barely move out in LF anymore, the Giants realized that was as high as the stock was gonna get and cut bait.

There's no reason to add this guy to your ballclub.  For those of you who think he's still got a 50 HR season in him and "can still swing the stick", you're hanging on for much too long.  Not every kid grows up to be an astronaut, not every guy gets to nail the prom queen, and even your baseball heroes turn into old men that can't hit anymore.

Wait five years.  You'll probably see him again in Cooperstown.  He'll be paying general admission for a ticket, but you'll see him there.

You know, I was thinking the very same thing. In fact I posted a blog about it.

This guy is a freaking wastebag!

Tired of hearing about him.

Tired of looking at him.

I honestly thought that the Yankees would pick up the 'Has Been" as a DH. Being that they will do anything for a win and a Championship right now!

But the Red Sox make just as much sense.

The curse has been broken (whatever) so let's just do whatever we have to so we can slaughter every opponent we are up against.

Ortiz?  What? Is Manny not MAN enough to fill his shoes? Probably not with his hot-doggin' pompous bull we see time and time again from him. Kind of reminds me of the man in the topic actually.

So Bonds to the dreaded Red Sox. Good. At least I won't have to see him in Green and Yellow!!

By the way. How many championship rings does Barry have?

That's what I thought!!

I think that if anyone picks him up, they would be thugs. And selfish ones at that. It is not just that BB juiced. Who cares. It is that he was too arrogant to tell the truth. God forbid he didn't break that record and give S.F. something to look forward to. Lord knows they needed it.

But he lied. To everyone. Lied his ass off. For selfish reasons. Even Giambi told the Grand Jury the truth about steroid use. But Giambi wasn't going for an all time record was he?

And Bonds is not a team player. I think he is PURE bad energy for any team. But I guess the Red Sox don't care about arrogance and honesty. And that says a lot about that team!! But nothing I didn't know already......

I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees didn't try to get their grubby hands on him as well. Bonds just might make a little more money than we think. Especially if he gets offers from Boston and New York.

GOD FORBID.

Throw the book at his ass already.

In my opinion, the man should not be allowed on a field until he has been cleared of all of these charges.

But this is Baseball. And the Comissioner will try to do just about anything to make Baseball worth watching. Even if it means letting Bonds keep on playing.

And that's the word..........................

He's not going to Boston and likely not anywhere else.  It makes zero sense for all the reasons written here.  If this was the old Yawkey Trust/Harrington group, I wouldn't be so sure, but it would be completely off the trail for John Henry and Co. to sign such a liability.

I have a feeling he'll go the way of Mark McGwire and stay out of sight until his Hall of Fame eligibility year or the next time he's subpoenaed, whichever comes first.
