Nearly a year to the day that the Texas Rangers poured in 30 runs against the Baltimore Orioles, they were involved in another race around the bases tonight in Boston.
Thanks to two David Ortiz three-run home runs in the first inning, the Red Sox put a 10-spot on the board and an easy victory looked safe. That was until the 5th, when the craziness broke out. Charlie Zink was making his major league debut for Sox in place of injured Tim Wakefield and must have felt pretty good about his getting his first win, but couldn't get out of the 5th. Eight runs tallied, Ian Kinsler scoring two of those himself.
By the 7th inning stretch, the Rangers had come all the way back to grab a lead until Kevin Youkalis smashed a go-ahead, game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the 8th.
Somehow, in all of this, Jonathan Papelbon earned his 32nd save.
Even crazier, the MLB leader in runs batted in, Josh Hamilton, drove in just one of the Rangers' 17 runs. Ortiz drove in six total runs, the most of anyone, Dustin Pedroia scored five of the Sox runs, and Marlon Byrd led the Rangers with a 5-for-6 night at the plate.
