The Red Sox now have the most unlikeable player in baseball

Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY SportsThe Red Sox were rumored to be interested in former Braves catcher Brian McCann, a move that I believed to be a mistake. I'm not a huge fan of McCann's police-like mentality on the field, and I didn't think he'd be worth the money in the long term, as he moves from catcher to a 1B/DH type of player in a couple years.

Little did I know, missing out on McCann prompted the Red Sox to go in an even worse direction.

The Red Sox are now on the verge of signing a one-year deal with AJ Pierzynski for $8.25 million.

While the contract length isn't nearly as cumbersome as the 5 years that McCann got, Pierzynski is easily the biggest douchebag in baseball, and it's a bit depressing as a Red Sox fan to see him coming to Fenway.

Perhaps it won't be quite as bad with him playing for the home team, and players seem to think pretty highly of him when he's not in the opposite dugout.

ESPN experts Tim Kurkjian, Buster Olney and Gordon Edes all seem to think this is a great move, so maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. But man, I just can't stand this guy. I'm going to hate myself when I'm rooting for him next summer.

Guess they needed somebody in the clubhouse to fill Josh Beckett's shoes/chicken bucket…
