Brad Childress joins Chiefs coaching staff as 'spread game analyst'
The move had been long awaited since Brad Childress met with newly instated Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid over two and a half months ago. But Brad Childress was still under contract by the Cleveland Browns at that time. Only recently did the Cleveland Browns, who also hired a new coaching staff this offseason, agree to release their former offensive coordinator Brad Childress from his contract.
Brad Childress re-joins Andy Reid in Kansas as the team’s new spread game analyst. Although the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t offer an explanation to Brad Childress’ new title or responsibilities, it essentially seems like he will help implement elements of the spread offense.
Andy Reid indicated he will take up the offensive play calling duties (at least initially) and is unlikely to ditch his West Coast scheme, while otherwise having offensive coordinator in Doug Pederson. But Andy Reid could be looking be occasionally looking at Brad Childress’ to mix it up for opposing defenses.
Brad Childress could possibly also be expected to work on how to take advantage of new quarterback Alex Smith’s experience in the spread-option. Alex Smith ran a version of the spread under then Utah coach Urban Myer. The 28-year-old Alex Smith is athletic enough to give defenses pause on option plays, even if it comprises only a small part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive scheme.
Others on the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coaching staff include Matt Nagy (quarterbacks), Tom Melvin (tight ends), Eric Bieniemy (running backs), David Culley (wide receivers) and Andy Heck (offensive line).
Brad Childress and Andy Reid also have a long coaching history. Both were assistants on the Northern Arizona coaching staff back in 1985. Then when Andy Reid became the Philadelphia Eagles head coach, he brought Brad Childress to Philadelphia as the quarterback coach (1999-2002) to be later promoted to offensive coordinator in 2003.
After spending three seasons with as the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Brad Childress left for a head coaching opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings.
Brad Childress spent 2011 away from football, and rejoined the circle with the Cleveland Browns in 2011.
