Brandon Webb 3rd Pitcher Ever to Start 6-0 in April [MLB Walk-Off]
by CriticalFanatic

Jake Peavy may have won the Cy Young last year, but Sunday he was beaten by the guy likely to take that title this year.

Brandon Webb was filthy yet again, but still not at his best. Six innings, five strikeouts and just one earned run. Good enough for a 6-0 start, the 4th ever time ever. Randy Johnson accomplished the feat twice and Dave Stewart did it in 1988 as well.

Diamondbacks continue to score their runs on the long ball, yesterday it was Chris Snyder's turn who drove in Stephen Drew for the only two Arizona runs of the game. Diamondbacks 2, Padres 1.

Delgado finally found his bat Big Carlos has been terrible so far this season and was appropriately booed during pregame introductions. He'll need to do a little more to get out of the doghouse, but two home runs on Sunday was a start. That brings his batting average to a lofty .205. Amusingly, the Mets fans wanted a curtain call to which Delgado didn't oblige. Mets 6, Braves 3.

Zit0-6
Barry's suckage continues -- giving up 6 runs in the first inning against Cincinnati. Just like Brandon Webb made history with a rare 6-0 April start, Barry Zito becomes the third pitcher ever to start 0-6. Tremendous work. Reds 10, Giants 1.

Any other thoughts on the Sunday in baseball, feel free to share below.

Looking at Retrosheet & Baseball Reference, it looks like in the 50s, the season started in mid-April. Going back further, it's a bit harder to tell since Retrosheet also seems to show some earlier games that I presume were exhibitions, but it looks like they didn't really start until late April or even early May.

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to look great against good teams too. Oh and the local Florida Marlins are playing some tight games. They are both fun to watch so far this year.

I pray that Barry does not win a game this year because the Zit0 - (fill in the # loss) is just so entertaining. Also showing again that paying a pitcher that much money is just plain stupid. How many end up being close to what their contracts are worth? Not many, maybe a handful, but for any you throw up I can send back a Darren Dreifort and Jason Schmidt.

I'm pretty sure this was the earliest start in baseball history. Still though, incredibly odd considering teams only went 3-4 starters a while back.

I say 17 losses due to the fact he may get bailed out by his team(Majors or AAA) on a few occasions and at least get him out of  the W/L factor.

Anyone think he would be good in the bullpen instead?

Only if they kept him chained there so he couldn't get out.

I'm sure once Zito gets to the 15 loss range, the Giants will make up an injury and send him to the DL.

They might as well try it.  Maybe they'll get something out of their investment then.

I wonder if he can hear A's fans laughing at him from across the Bay.

Or tie a cement block to him and throw him into McCovey Cove.

If he can't now, he will with two more losses.
