First it was Walt Jocketty with the Cardinals. Now, it looks like another long time GM will be stepping aside.
John Schuerholz, arguably the architect of what was the model franchise for making the playoffs, is reportedly stepping aside as GM of the Atlanta Braves. Schuerholz will likely be turning the reigns over to his assistant Frank Wren while he takes over the job of President of the organization.
Schuerholz was a genius with the franchise, and assembled what was one of the most dominant pitching staffs in the game. With the help of Leo Mazzone, he was able to take players with potential and turn them into stars. Come on, where else has Kevin Millwood done well?
It is unfortunate that as the core of the team aged, he wasn't able to keep doing what he was so good at over the years, but he still performed a major accomplishment.
I remember watching Braves games on cable when we first got it in my house, and the Braves were terrible. I was mainly watching to see the team that they were playing (and Dale Murphy). It is remarkable that he was able to turn that pathetic team into one that made the playoffs 14 years in a row.
