Has there ever been a more depressing loss than Brazil's 7-1 flogging at the hands of Germany?

There are losses. There are devastating losses. And then there's Brazil's 7-1 loss to Germany in the World Cup semifinals.

There may never have been a more demoralizing defeat than the one the Brazilians suffered yesterday. On their home turf, fans were completely crushed by the utter helplessness their team exhibited on the pitch.

The Brazilian newspaper front pages give a pretty good idea of how bad it was.

Without Neymar to help keep the ball up front, their defense wasn't able to organize. There were four goals I realized would go in several seconds before they happened. This is the impact one player can have.

Honestly, I don't think anybody expected this. And when you realize how rich soccer is in Brazil, you realize this is one of the most humiliating losses in the history of sports. (I'd say England's loss to the US in 1950 is still the worst. Even though it was 1-0, look at how well the US was expected to bomb, and England was disheartened as Spain beat them to move on over the tournament favorites.)

Personally, I had Germany over Brazil in my brackets here, but 2-1. Even Germans didn't expect this.

The inclusion of one or even two top guys really would not have prevented a loss of such magnitude.  Would those guys have really changed the psyche of the entire team?  Doubtful.

I have to wonder if Brazil would have lost in such a devastating fashion, had they not lost Neymar.  We will never know.

However, I was entertained by the newpaper headlines and photographs.

The psyche of Brazil was already frayed with the loss of Neymar after their round of 16 game.  After Germany scored that first goal, you could tell that Brazil was going to be in big trouble.
