Regrettably, we weren't treated to what would have been one of the better all time college upsets - Belmont over Duke. But at least the game proved how vulnerable Duke is this year, and made me feel good that I have them getting bounced in the second round in about half of the 74 brackets I entered. The afternoon action was all chalk with the exception of USC/K-State, but let's take a quick look.
Stanford 77 Cornell 53 - Despite the fact that Cornell dominated the Ivy League, the NCAA Tournament is where big boys play. This game was over about 5 minutes in. But it did provide the best highlight of the Tourney so far - Stanford's Landry Fields getting rejected by the rim on a wide open dunk attempt.
Kansas State 80 USC 67 - This was supposed to be the game of the day, not Duke/Belmont, since it featured super froshs OJ Mayo and Michael Beasley. Both had slow first halves (Beasley was in foul trouble) before turning it on in the second half. But K-State was never without a comfortable lead in this game and USC ran into some foul trouble that didn't help at all. All those who were on the USC bandwagon, including myself to a degree, got what we deserved.
Duke 71 Belmont 70 - Duke sucks.
Washington State 71 Winthrop 40 - This game sure looked interesting for a half, then Washington State blew the doors off in this one. Winthrop - which has become a somewhat sexy upset pick these last few years - scored 11 second half points. That won't win you many games.
Texas A&M 67 BYU 62 - I could care less about these teams, whoever won isn't getting out of the second round anyway.
Notre Dame 68 George Mason 50 - Everyone was asking if this year's George Mason team, with two returning players from their Final Four team could be this year's George Mason. It hurt just thinking about that. Thankfully, there is some order to the universe and a team cannot be another version of itself.
Wisconsin 71 Cal State Fullerton 56 - For some reason, some people saw an upset here. I have no clue why. Wisconsin has what I call "Stanford Syndrome" of exiting in the second round every year, but this squad should be able to make it to the Sweet 16.
West Virginia 75 Arizona 65 - If you've watched 'Zona play at all this year, this game shouldn't have surprised you all. Are they talented? Yeah, more or less. Do they play to their potential? Lord no.
UCLA 70 Mississippi Valley State 29 - Jerry Rice's alma mater, uh, couldn't quite get over the hump in this one. It was close for about the tip-off, and that was it. If people are wondering why UCLA is the popular pick to win it all (I also have them winning it all) this game would be a good indication. Sure this was a 16 seed, but this was a dominating performance by a team that looks ready to roll.
