Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has snubbed speculation suggesting the Anfield brass were planning on selling their star goalkeeper Pepe Reina during the January transfer window. Brendan Rodgers backed the Spain international to regain his best form to become the best in the Premier League.
Media reports suggest Liverpool are planning a covert move for the Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland or the young German star Ron-Robert Zieler. Insiders from Birmingham City claim Liverpool have already offered a transfer proposal, but there has been no confirmation from the Merseyside as yet.
In an interview to the Press Association Sport, Brendan Rodgers refused to comment on Liverpool’s transfer business. However, Brendan Rodgers did declare that he expects Pepe Reina to return in his best form next month.
“I don't like to talk about speculation as I've know in my time at Liverpool the names we have been linked with has been incredible,” Brendan Rodgers told the Press Association Sport. “But what is worth putting on record is that I'm not looking for another goalkeeper.
“We have been linked with lots of goalkeepers. I have two very good goalkeepers - Pepe Reina and Brad Jones, who is a very loyal and capable number two. Any areas we look to improve will be in other areas.”
Pepe Reina’s recent performances have put his future at Liverpool in question. The Spaniard has failed to impress since a hamstring injury in October, which is why he has been demoted to the bench. Brendan Rodgers has sent Pepe Reina back into rehabilitation so that 30-year-old regains his form.
“Pepe Reina is clearly our number one goalkeeper, one of the best goalkeepers in the league,” Brendan Rodgers continued. “He had a difficult couple of years but for me his best years are ahead of him and his commitment to the cause and what we are trying to achieve is 150 per cent.
“He has taken on board himself to do a lot of work to get in the best possible state he can be in physically and mentally and I am so happy with him. He is a great man and has been a wonderful player for me in this short period of time on and off the field.
“I can see him starting to get back to the level he set here, which was a really high standard, and hopefully that continues.”
Brendan Rodgers is expected to test Pepe Reina in Liverpool’s final Europa League game of Group A on Thursday. Liverpool is scheduled to face Udinese, who are already eliminated, at the Stadio Friuli.
