The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel managed to get their hands on the transcript of the second half of Brett Favre's interview with Greta Van Susteren that will be airing today, and shock of shocks, Favre goes after Packers GM Ted Thompson like a starving hyena attacks scraps.Rather than reprint everything, which would be a waste of your time and mine, there are three main points that Favre is pissed about.
In one instance, Favre told Van Susteren that “I worked my butt off two years ago to try to get them to sign Randy Moss,” adding that he was willing to give up salary to land the talented receiver.Ok, first off, I can understand him being pissed off about not getting Moss. However, do I think Moss would have won them the Super Bowl? No, I think they would have still been beaten by the Patriots. But then again, I expected the Pats to beat the Giants, so there's some validity to Favre's anger about Moss.
But Favre said Thompson denied publicly that Favre had lobbied to get Moss, which Favre said was not the case. Moss signed with the New England Patriots.
In a second instance, Favre said he once tried to convince Thompson to re-sign Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, two key linemen, but the two got away and signed elsewhere.
In a third case, Favre told Van Susteren he tried to convince Thompson to interview Steve Mariucci, an old friend, for the head coaching job vacated by Mike Sherman. Favre said Thompson ended up hiring Mike McCarthy instead.
“And none of those had anything to do with me retiring once again but, you know, it’s hard for me to trust, you know, this guy when I — either I’m told one thing and everyone else is told another, or he’s telling the public one thing and telling me another. And so — and that’s part of the reason for the release.”
Two, in regards to the linemen, this happens all the time. It's called "deal with it."
Three, as someone who watched Mariucci underachieve with my beloved and talented 49ers, because Mooch's playcalling SUCKED (run, run, pass, every damn set of downs) I actually think the Packers got a much better coach in McCarthy.
So what are we left here? Thompson missed Moss, the lineman leaving is something that happens all time, and Favre likely got an upgrade at head coach. Is that enough for Favre to demand a release?
Well, Thompson certainly made a mistake with Moss. But we only say that now because Moss performed so well in New England. There was no guarantee when Favre wanted to sign Moss that Moss would suddenly turn into a great receiver again. Favre's anger is more in hindsight than anything else. As in "Well, Moss was great with the Pats, so he would have been great with us!" There's no guarantee that would have been the case.
So Favre's position is slightly understandable on one level. But is that a good enough reason for him to knock McCarthy as well, in addition to taking a huge dump on Aaron Rodgers? The answer is no. He still looks pretty bad, even if there is a tiny bit of validity to his incessant whining.
