Brett Favre Traded To New York Jets. Who's Happy About This? The NFL Sure Is!
Oy Vey, Favre To Guide J-E-T-S Through Murky Waters
READ MORE:
NFL
The gunslinger from the wild (mid)west has now gone metro.  Brett Favre to the Jets?  Ugh.  This was the one place I don't think Favre wanted to end up.  (Well, I guess Atlanta was another place he didn't want to end up)

While only time will tell how this deal with shake out for all parties involved, but I think there are some early winners and losers.

WINNERS

New York Jets
I think the Jets are the obvious winners here.  Will they win their division with Favre?  Nah, probably not.  But, they can finally put a fork in the Chad Pennington era in the Big Apple.  That alone has to be worth something.  Kind of like ending a dysfunctional relationship even though the other person is really nice.  Anytime you have an open quarterback competition and Pennington is the winner, you're a loser.  Plus this gives the Jets some excitement in a market that owns the current Super Bowl Champion.  Also, what did the Jets give up?  A draft pick.  Based on their previous drafting decisions, I think the Packers did them a favor.

The NFL
Cha-ching, baby.  Not only are the Giants the Super Bowl Champs, but now you'll be able to move some of that Jets gear.  Apparently the NFL and the Jets didn't waste any time, as they were taking orders for Favre jerseys early Thursday morning.  Way to ride the wave, guys!  You can't keep your players out of jail, but you can sure make a buck.  The Sports Business Digest is already calling this the single-biggest NFL trade in the past 19 years. I don't know if I can agree or disagree.  They do make some good points, though.

Jeff Garcia
You and your hot wife get to continue your career in Tampa.  Congrats!  You've taken a lot of career-killing bullets over the years  (T.O., Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, homosexual rumors, etc...), but you managed to dodge this one!

LOSERS

Minnesota Vikings
Man, how sweet would that have been?  To watch your rival crumble while you're soaring with their Hall of Fame quarterback.  You were SO CLOSE!  Too bad the Packers have more sense than you do.  I don't see how you come out of this any better.  It helps that you have a great young runningback and a decent receiver corps, but you still have a pretty unproven quarterback at the helm.   This was going to be the trade that put you over the top.

Brett Favre
Well, Brett, you fought the law and the law won.  I thought you were going to emerge from this crazy game of chicken a victor, I really did.  I thought you had the Packers in a position where they were going to give you whatever you wanted.  You played a tough game, but in the end you lose, buddy.  Playing for the Vikings would have been nice.  Honestly, I think you would have enjoyed Tampa.  I don't think New York is going to offer the same luxuries.  Oh, there will be plenty of hoopla and fanfare in New York, the likes of which you wouldn't see in Tampa or Minnesota.  But once all the craziness settles down, you're still going to be a Jet.  Sorry about that.  As one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, you deserve better.  As a navigator of your career, you're getting exactly what you deserve.

TO BE DETERMINED

Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers
Well, this one is easy.  If Aaron Rodgers has a great year, the Packers are going to look like geniuses.  They're going to look like the millionaire that pulled his money from the stock market a week before it collapses.  No one in the league or in Green Bay (maybe) will hold them in a negative light if they make a spectacular run to the Super Bowl.  However.....if Aaron Rodgers stinks it up this year, this could be a career killer for a few folks in Green Bay.  The Packers have won this battle now, but it remains to be seen as to whether they've got the tools to win the war.  Good luck, Aaron Rodgers.  You're gonna need it!

In a round about way, I consider the Bears, Lions and even Vikings small winners. They now have a better chance to beat the Packers, which they all desperately need. More so, the Lions and Bears, though.

You're being very generous to the Lions.  Nothing like a little pre-season respect, eh?

I'm just glad this mess is over. Now I won't cringe everytime I hear Favre's name.

Based on the calls I heard on talk radio last night, Jet fans are very excited about this move. I don't know how much Favre really helps them, but I guess in the short term, it's a move the Jets had to make. What a money maker this will be!

I want the Pack to succeed .. because I am and always will be a fan.  But, I did expect a period of rebuilding after Favre was gone (retired).  Having said that, since this choice was diliberate... I definitely won't have a problem with another 4-12 season this year -- especially because that will mean Thompson's job -- and at this point -- that's the best gift any Packers fan could ask for.

Good luck to Brett -- I'm happy he gets to play -- and now I get to continue watching this trainwreck of a season for the Pack.

But I think that the pain might be less than most people would have thought. Just 2 years ago they were 4-12 and Thompson has built a nice team that was 13-3 last year. If Grant is what the Packers think he is going to be that will help Rodgers immensely. Now its all on Rodgers to be a decent first year starter. This season for GB will initally rest on the Defense until the offense catches up.

Also I have a little problem with calling the Vikings a loser. How can that be said when they had no realistic chance of landing Favre? The Packers put a clause in the trade with NY, that if any team of the NFC North lands Favre the Jets would owe the Pack 3 first round picks. That would include the Jets trading Favre to another team and that team moving him. See so I just dont think Minnesota was ever really going to get him.

Good points!  I called them losers in this case simply because they weren't able to get Favre, whether they had a chance or not.  Of all the teams mentioned with Favre, I think they would have benefitted the most.

I complete agree in the sense that by not getting Favre they lsot a great opportunity. I just misunderdstood your meaning. With Favre the Vikings would have been a serious threat to Dallas in the NFC. Good post BTW

Yep, I agree.  I think if the Vikings had landed Favre they would have been a pretty serious threat to win it all.

I agree as well -- they would be a major threat... now that conference is up in the air -- could go either way or ways
