New York's CBS affiliate has confirmed that Brett Favre has been traded to the Jets. While this is a huge improvement over Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington who were competing for the Jets' starting QB job, this deal still leaves the Jets firmly in the running for 2nd place in their division.Favre will join an offense that features RB Thomas Jones, WR's Lavernues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, and a solid offensive line, behind the strength of Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and the recently signed 7-time Pro Bowler Alan Faneca.
Favre will definitely be the center of attention in New York, which seems to be what he has wanted all along. And although the Patriots seem poised to stay on top of the AFC East for at least one more year, the Jets are certainly much improved with Favre at the helm. Chad Pennington has been mediocre for years, but Kellen Clemens hasn't shown enough to unseat him as the starter. That's a sad situation, when Chad Pennington is capable of winning a QB competition. But the Jets can worry no longer, since Favre will certainly be the starter as soon as he puts on the uniform.
Last year, Favre threw for 4155 yards, 28 TD's, 15 INT's and a 66.5% completion percentage. The Jets' QBs combined for only 3014 yards, with 15 TD's and 19 picks, and a 60% completion percentage. Favre will undoubtedly improve an offense that ranked 25th in the NFL in passing yards, 27th in passing TD's, and 25th in yards per pass attempt.
Can the Jets win the AFC East with Favre as the starting QB? Will Favre duplicate his numbers of 2007, or will he revert back to 2005, when he led the league in INT's?
Discuss.
