A pair of first-year center icemen who played key roles for their respective teams over the weekend – Michigan Technological University’s Brett Olson and the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Jack Connolly – have been named Red Baron® WCHA co-Rookies of the Week for Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
Olson, a 6-0, 175-pound freshman from Superior, Wis., scored three goals and added one assist for four scoring points as Michigan Tech earned back-to-back 3-3 overtime ties on the road against league-rival Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 23-24. He had a goal and an assist last Friday and then came back with two more goals on Saturday. In addition, he fired five shots on goal in the series. On the season, Olson is second at Tech in scoring with 8-9–17.
Connolly, a 5-8, 160-pound freshman from Duluth, Minn., racked up five points during UMD’s two-game sweep of Minnesota State, Mankato last Friday and Saturday. He had two goals, including the game-winner, in the Bulldogs’ 4-0 win on Jan. 23 and then added one goal and two assists in a 7-4 victory on Jan. 24. In addition to his five points, Connolly fired nine shots on goal and earned a +5 plus/minus rating in the series. He is fourth in scoring this season among his UMD teammates with 6-14–20.
