The United States is sending the gayest delegation ever to Sochi
Well, make that THREE gay athletes, now that figure skating legend Brian Boitano has also announce that he's a homosexual.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made some pretty strong anti-gay comments and decisions leading up to the Sochi games, even going so far as to say that he'd arrest people who protest Russia's decidedly homophobic equality laws.
Obama wanted to make it clear where the United States stood on the issue, so now his delegation to Sochi is 60% gayer than Putin would have liked, with the inclusion of Boitano, two-time hockey medalist Caitlin Cahow and International Tennis Hall of Famer Billie Jean King.
Obama's message will surely come across loud and clear, whether or not Putin and the Russian government chooses to change their stance or not. The Olympics have often been a time when countries have tried to come together and toss aside differences and conflicts in the name of competition.
Will this be a huge moment in the global gay rights movement? It has the opportunity to do that, and kudos to Obama for selecting several extremely qualified and influential athletes who also happen to be gay.
UPDATE: My deepest apologies, folks. I almost forgot to include this obligatory video.
