Brian McDermott has declared himself a Sir Alex Ferguson fans. The Reading manager joined the millions following a private encounter with the legendary Old Trafford boss. Brian McDermott revealed he always had great respect for Sir Alex Ferguson, but it increased tenfold after the Manchester United manager responded to his SOS signal.

Sir Alex Ferguson is well known for giving a helping hand to new and rising coaches. Brian McDermott, who is finding his way with Reading since 2009, told reporters that he was surprised at how quickly the Scotsman came to his rescue.
“I spoke to him in January about something that I needed to address and he was very helpful to me and giving me good advice,” said Brian McDermott.
“I spoke to his son and asked him if he wouldn't mind Sir Alex giving me a ring. And, five minutes after that conversation, a private number came up and it was him. So, that just tells you the caliber of the man and what he's about.”
When Brian McDermott was pressed over the topic of the conversation he had with Sir Alex Ferguson back then, the 51-year-old manager labeled the conversation as a private matter.
“That's between him and me and obviously just talking to him was good for me,” Brian McDermott said. “I don't know him particularly well but I just know him from that instance and I know that he's done that with a lot of young managers in the past. He does a lot for football and he does a lot for people in the game, and everyone respects that.”
Sir Alex Ferguson might have lent a helping hand to Brian McDermott back then, but the former Arsenal player should expect no mercy from the Scotsman on Saturday when his side hosts the English Premier League leaders at the Madejski Stadium.
Brian McDermott understands that he will face the biggest test of his managerial career on Saturday. Reading are currently in relegation zone with nine points from 13 Premier League games.

“He has done it, been there, seen it,” Brian McDermott said. “Everybody's got the ultimate respect for Sir Alex and everything he's achieved.”
