FanIQ | Sports Rumors, Gossip, Blogs, News & Discussion ForumsWith the addition of Jay Buowmeester last year at the trade deadline, The Blues became a team with one of the best defenses in the league. With this year being his final year of his contract, Owner Tom Stillman and GM Doug Armstrong did not want to worry about having to resign him in free agency. It was announced earlier this week that the Blues had agreed to a five-year extension. However, the full details of the contract were not released. With the Blues being close to the salary cap, it can only be assumed that the deal was for less money per year than what he currently makes ($6.68 million/year). With all of the defensemen returning, with the exception of Alex Pietrangelo, who is still waiting to be signed, we should see very familiar defensive pairings.

Also, Blues forward Magnus Paajarvi, whom they acquired from Edmonton in the trade for David Perron, signed a 2-year deal this week as well. GM Doug Armstrong said in an interview this week, “Magnus is a well-rounded player who has good size and great skating ability,” Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong said after acquiring Paajarvi from Edmonton. “He is just coming into his own and this will open up more ice time for Jaden (Schwartz) and Vladimir (Tarasenko).”

With Schwartz being the tough player in the playoffs last year and Tarasenko struggling to score, this should bode well for the Blues who hope to score more goals and be in contention in high scoring games.

Paajarvi will wear #56 for the Bluenote

Until next time,
