CHL Hockey Player in Critical Condition after a Wicked Hit
Junior Hockey Players learning the Wrong Skills
WARNING: The Video below is disturbing

Kitchener Rangers' player, Ben Fanelli, is in critical but stable condition in hospital after the hit by Mike Liambus of the Erie Otters on Friday.

Yes, we see these kinds of hits all to often in the NHL, but is this what the Junior players are learning?

Mike Liambus was apparently very shaken up by the results of his hard hit on Ben, and maybe that will stop him from ever making that kind of hit again.  He received a match penalty and was ejected from the game for the boarding penalty.

It doesn't help Ben, or his family, who must sit by and watch to see if their son, brother, grandson will recuperate fully from a fractured skull and facial bones.  Fanelli's mother reportedly fainted upon seeing her son lying on the ice and had to be revived.

Is it time the rules for hockey in general were rewritten? We see the hits all too often in the NHL, will it take a death before the rules are rewritten?

I think this comes back to making sure that coaches are espousing the most important values of the game.  They have to police this and make sure kids understand the right way to play the game.

I really hate seeing these things happen. I sure hope he recovers. Not sure what rule would be changed to prevent that hit in the NHL though?

I really hope the kid doesn't end up with permanent brain damage. That would be a tragic waste of a young life.

I think it truly is a matter of what the kids see in the "big leagues".  They see these hits, and they feel they should be making them as well, but they need to realise the repercussions of the hits as well.  I don't want Liambus to quit playing hockey, but he learned this from watching others, likely the pros, do it.  I don't know that changing the rule in the NHL is the answer either, I just don't want to witness any more serious injuries or worse, becuase of these boarding hits.

After reading more about this. The kids career is most likely over as he is an over-aged forward who is a goon with low point totals and high PIM.

I am a Kitchener Rangers fan, and I was watching this game. It was so horriible to see it happen.

I really hope he'll be okay. Ben is in my thoughts and prayers.

An update on Ben he is in and out of consciousness, but when he is conscious he can recognize those around him & he can remember his own name.

Jesse , you're 17, I'm not sure what is "old" to you

What a cheap shot I thought I was watching Racki from Youngblood

Its hockey folks, people get hit hard sometimes.  "He is in my prayers......Pray he is okay......blah, blah, blah.......If you get into a sport and can't hack it then maybe you should rethink your options and stick to quilting.  I am sure he and his family knew the potential dangers of getting into the sport and accepted it.

I hate to see someone get seriously injured, but that's hockey.  Hope the kid recovers, but that's a simple result of what happens when you groom kids in high school to try and become pros.  They'll try to play like pros, they'll hit like pros, they'll get hurt like pros.

It wasn't a cheap shot.  It was a hard hit, and barely illegal.  Generally, to be boarded means the player is facing the boards, and a few feet away.  This was a violent hit, but Fanelli was not facing the boards when Liambus hit him, and he was right at the boards.  Hell, 5-6 years ago, this would not have received any sort of penalty.

It was not only a hard hit against the boards but a cheap shot as well. Mike rushed him with his stick high & across his body. Ben took a stick to the face, while being slammed into the boards. How is that NOT a cheap shot?
Hockey is a contact sport and at times can be violent, but that was barbaric.

Liambis, a 20-year-old from Woodbridge, is suspended during the review. Ben is still in Intensive Care so he is not out of danger. Yes it was an upgrade but still touch and go. Prayers are with the family and Ben as he recovers. I think that was the worst hit I have seen in hockey. I have been to many, Dayton Bombers Games but this in fact, was a site I have never seen.

Thanks Lisa, I was just reading the update.  I'm sure that Liambus has had many of thos "Oh if only I could go back" moments in the last few days, but let's just hope Ben makes a full recovery.   I know I'm praying for it.

David Branch has come down with his suspension  Liambis season is over and most likely his hockey career as he is an over aged goon with low point totals and high PIM.
