Calgary Flames acquire Jonas Hiller
Today came the news that the Calgary Flames - my team - have signed former Anaheim Ducks goalie, Jonas Hiller.
Now the Flames have struggled the past few years and that is no secret. However, there are fans, and then there are fair-weather fans. Today I got a glimpse of more fair-weather friends than I've seen in the past. Some of those fans aren't happy about this signing.
Jonas Hiller was a stellar goalie for the Ducks. Just ask Jess. Seriously.
Jonas played for the Ducks for seven seasons and his butterfly style goaltending got the job done for the team. He was the number one goaltender for the Ducks and while they didn't repeat their Stanley Cup win of 2008, their seasons with Hiller were nothing to be ashamed of. Unfortunately, Hiller had some issues with vertigo that affected his ability to perform in the net. The Ducks have two newcomers they are working with for the number one spot, and it seems Jonas has done his time there.
Hiller will be paid $9 million in his two year deal, but will have to compete with Karri Ramo (who celebrates a birthday today) for the number one starting position. Ramo did well for the Flames last year, although he was no Kiprusoff.
The Flames continue to rebuild the team, and in this fan's opinion, Jonas Hiller is a step in the right direction.
