Calvin Johnson quietly seeks to break NFL receiving yards record
But while the coverage has gravitated towards Peterson's quest for an historic season, there has been another quest taking place. A much quieter quest, but no less impressive. Detroit wide receiver, Calvin Johnson ("Megatron") is in hot pursuit of the NFL single season receiving yards record of 1,848 yards set in 1995 by Jerry Rice. In fact, over the next two games, Johnson just needs 181 total yards to tie and 182 yards to make the record his own. This might be more doable than the 294 rushing yards that Peterson needs to set the rushing record, yet no one is talking about it.
That's correct, this very year it is quite likely that the great Jerry Rice's NFL record for single season receiving yards will be broken. And you may not have heard (much) about it. Although Johnson's touchdowns (5) are down from previous years, this would still be an incredible achievement.
What Johnson is doing should not diminish what Adrian Peterson or other players are doing. But it also shouldn't be flying under the radar to the extent that it is - the media should give some attention to a storyline as big and important as this. It may be a big year for both rushing and receiving yards in the NFL. Let's enjoy both accomplishments and give both players the credit they deserve.
