Canadian Writer Claims The NHL Extended The Wings/Pens Series
So Did The NHL Purposely Try And Extend The Wings/Pens Series? Yes.
After last night's rather poorly officiated NBA Finals game, we're once again hearing the yearly ref conspiracy theory rumors again. But generally speaking, those fixed game accusations - in any sport - come from fans of the team that got hosed and bloggers in their mothers' basements. You don't hear it from someone totally unbiased and in the mainstream media.

But no longer.

One brave Canadian sports writer is still hammering away about the NHL Finals, and he believes the fix was in to extend the series so the Pens could stick around longer.

Tony Gallagher, who had his article published in the Vancouver Province and National Post, didn't mince his words.
While nobody really wanted to say so, how could you have possibly watched the calls in that series and not had the feeling that somehow, consciously or more likely unconsciously, there was a slant toward favouring the Pittsburgh Penguins?
Gallagher goes on to point out numerous occasions in which the Red Wings got completely hosed on calls, but gives special attention to Pavel Datsyuk getting tripped with 18 seconds left in Game 6 with no call. Gallagher says, rather hilariously, "he was hauled down with an abundantly obvious stick foul so blatant that Helen Keller would have been forced to raise her arm."

Gallagher believes that the NHL wanted to extend the series because it was pulling in such great ratings. If that is indeed true, it's hard to blame the NHL for doing that. There's no question hockey hasn't been doing well these last few years, so any opportunity they have to push the sport in the American market is something they should take advantage of.

And here's the thing, I actually wouldn't doubt Gallagher's claims either. I've long been skeptical of the motives of major sports leagues in terms of how they handle key playoffs match ups. After all, sports are a business. It's better to have Lakers/Celtics than Pistons/Spurs, and it's better to have Crosby and Malkin stick around to battle the mighty Red Wings than get blanked 4-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Plus we've seen what happened with Tim Donaghy, and no one can bring up a reffing conspiracy theory post without the 2002 Lakers/Kings Western Conference Finals Game 6, where LA shot an unreal 27 4th quarter free throws to squeeze out a win.

So I'll go along Gallagher. The Red Wings clearly got hosed numerous times in that series. But in the long run, if that the Stanley Cup Final helped hockey begin to bring itself back to big time popularity, I'd say it was worth it.

OMG! The Wings were hosed!  They were totally cheated out of the Cup.

Wait?  They won?

Damn, I knew it, there had to be a second sniper with a blistering wrist shot from the grassy knoll. If you look at the film you will see it. Up and to the left, up and to the left . . .

the refs have been horrible and inconsistent all season and all postseason long. however, they showed some consistency when the refs favored the penguins throughout the entire playoffs (well i didn't see any of round one of pens vs sens). whether this was intentional or not i am not going to argue, but the pens definetely got the benefit of the doubt in every situation. there is no question that the refs tried to help the pens out in the finals against the overpowering red wings, including 2 5-on-3s compared to the wings zero. their 2nd 5-on-3 in game 6 was created by a non-existent charging call against dallas drake. very suspicious. drake simply made a clean, nothing out of the ordinary hit along the boards- elbows down, glided into the hit, didn't leave his fit, shoulder-to-shoulder. and it wasn't like the penguin was hurt or even fell to the ice. and it wasn't even crosby that got hit

it was clear that they tried to help get the pens back in the game when they were down 3-1 with a few minutes left. i even said to my brother who was watching the game when there was about 10 mins left in the game, "what phantom call do you think they will make with less than 5 minutes left?" Lo and behold, there was a wussy "hooking" call that they let go the entire third period with 2 minutes left in the game. of course the pens score making it a one goal game. then as the writer said, datsyuk had a clear break to the net and would have iced the game, but was hauled down in a blatant tripping penalty. no call. the pens counter and ALMOST tie the game.

also, in game 5, the refs were letting EVERYTHING go late in the 3rd and in OT, which made for some VERY exciting hockey (hint hint gary bettman). but then 2 VERY questionable goaltender interference calls were made against the wings. these were the only calls up until a wussy hooking call against the penguins. the high stick (double minor) in 3OT in which sykora scored was warranted and had to be made

Holy crap. Officiating is so subjective. Ya the refs tried their hardest to help the poor poor Pens win the cup. Gimme a break.  I am tired of people complaining about the officiating. Grow up! Ya it was the officiating that cause the Wings to win 4 games. How about this, the team with better team won this year. HOLY SHIT! What a concept

easy killer.

apparently you didn't even read my post. i said the refs FAVORED the penguins throughout the penguins- intentional or not. the officiating has been horrible all season. nobody can expect it to be perfect. however, this year in particular, there have been some very poor calls that go BOTH WAYS.

your post overall makes sense. i said the pens got the better of the calls, you acknowledged what i said, and yet you say sarcastically that the officiating caused the wings to win in 4 games. first off, they won in 6, second, why would officiating that benefits the penguins CAUSE the wings to win in 4???

of course the better team won! the wings are a great team that i predicted to win it all (after my rangers got knocked out), and they managed to win rather desicevely with sub-par officiating.

fair enough

I am tired of all the complaining about the officiating. Sure it may have some impact. But all calls are really subjective. What may look like a tripping penalty to one may not to another. Plus the game is so fast anymore it is hard to call every penalty. I remember when there was only one official on the ice. What would help if the NHL would let the linesman call minor penalties. They are also on the ice. By only allowing 2 of the 4 officials to call penalties opens the NHL up to criticism. But at least they don't have the nightmare of the NBA right now

i hear ya, i get sick of people complaining about officiating, even though i am one who sometimes can blame losses or say the outcome would have been different. when bad officiating hits your team, you just feel a sense of injustice

about the amount of officials on the ice, i think that the one ref system was actually better. with the 2 ref system, one ref is down low in the attacking zone, and the other is at center ice. how can the ref at center ice see what is going on down low through all of the bodies? i recall an instance in the SCF where the ref from center ice called goaltender interference because he saw the goalie fall when it probably should have been ignored- that area is responsible for the official who is right in front of the action. maybe linseman should be able to make calls, but only ones that are up high in their area.

also, my distress with the officials through all of this year is the inconsistency and the calls being made at their OWN discretion. for example, one ref may call goalie interference for the tap of a stick, while another ref will let it go when somone clear runs into the goalie. each penalty is called differently by each ref, so how are the players, coaches, and fans to know what is a penalty? given, hockey is definetely a fast game, but the league needs to tell the officials what a penalty actually is so they are all on the same page

It is just par for the course. I remember when they started to crack down on interferance and obstruction. That experiment ended by the middle of the season. I think not matter what happens there will always be people unhappy with how the game is called. I do agree certain calls need to be uniformed. Goalie interference is one that is never consistent. Plus all the clutching and grabbing. I think they should start to replace some of the older refs who will not adapt. fraiser, mcgeough, and such need to retire or be forced to be reply officials. That way the newer refs will be uniformed
