Count me among those pleasantly surprised by Michigan's thrilling win over Florida in their own backyard. With two blowouts in the BCS openers, the Capitol One Bowl was without a doubt the game of the day and maybe even the entire bowl season.
The shocking part here for most who picked the Gators to win easily, is that this game was a couple touchdowns closer than it could have been. Chad Henne and the Wolverines offense dominated the game, however they turned the ball over 4 times, 2 of which occurred inside the 1 yard line (another pass intercepted inside the 5).
Lloyd Carr, who was uncharacteristically creative with the offense, got to ride out on top in his final game as Michigan coach. Hopefully this quiets some of the irrational 'Big Ten is the worst conference and can't hang with the SEC talk.'
As for Tim Tebow, he wasn't able to quiet the typical post Heisman talk. That makes three straight losing efforts for the trophy winner. That said, I like the Gators as one of the early favorites for next season. Tebow and Harvin will only be better and the defense will have some experience to build on.
p.s. Horrible job by the officials not subsiding the embarrassing trash talking which started with Florida jumping up and down at the 50, trying to bait Michigan into some pre-game sparing.
That really was a pretty great performance by Michigan, outside of Hart's fumbles. It definitely makes you wonder why they weren't doing this all season.

I just caught that comment, reading through it again. I don't think many people are saying Big Ten is the worst conference, thanks to the existences of the ACC and Big East, but if you think this one game, a game which Michigan had a whole lot more to play for, is going to change that perception, you're crazy.
Without getting into the details, the Big Ten is 2-4 (tied with the ACC for worst major conference record) this bowl season, while the SEC is 6-2, the best conference bowl record.
I know you're a Big Ten homer and I'll get some caveat about how the Big Ten has unfair bowl matchups or something, because there's always a caveat when someone disses the Big Ten, but the conference is just not very good this year.
I posted this yesterday on the game thread, but Michigan is now 23-5-1 all time (6-1 in the last 7) against the SEC. I think its safe to say that Michigan has done their part against the SEC. I can't believe I will cheering for the Bucks next week, but the Big Ten needs the win. By the way, OSU is like 0-8 all time vs the SEC. Not helping.
I totally agree. Michigan has proved their exsistence and how they can hold up some of the best teams in the nation. But I'm not sure if that can totally make up for the team they lost to for their first game of the season. But you for sure have to give Michigan their props.

Appalachian State is better than Louisiana-Monroe....

The "perception" will never change, quite honestly, because of the SEC elitists (and you sound like one) who place "their" conference on a pedestal when it comes to matchups between the two...and really them & every other conference.
The SEC is a great conference. Everyone knows that. But when people get these notions in their heads that this conference is better than the other, it becomes a short-sighted argument. Place the Big Ten's best against the SEC's best & history shows that the matchups even out. Michigan has historically been great against the SEC. Ohio St. hasn't done so well. Alabama sucks against the Big Ten. LSU has done well. In the end, it's all about matchups. If you put Northwestern against Florida---well duh---the Big Ten looks sad. Same would hold true if you put Michigan against Ole Miss.
Basically, just have some perspective instead of wielding that broad brush of yours...

I definitely don't consider myself an SEC elitist, but I could see how that could come off that way. My post was basically in response to the initial comment that it was irrational to say the Big Ten couldn't hang with the SEC.
I agree that historically, the two conferences are pretty similar and wouldn't say that one is significantly better than the other. But for this season alone, the SEC is clearly better, and no, the Big Ten as a whole would not hang with the SEC and I think the bowl results, among other things, support my position.
Look, I don't think the Big Ten is the worst thing ever; I do think they are below the SEC, Pac-10, and the Big XII, are a little better than the ACC, and a lot better than the Big East. I think I'm being fair in saying that.
And if people have a problem with me pointing it out again, then don't make the initial comment that the Big Ten isn't so bad and is comparable to the SEC, because you're just inviting people like myself to attempt to correct that by using actual results from this season, rather than calling on the historic matchups to point out why they are comparable for this season.

I don't really disagree with any of points. In fact most of them are undeniable, but I do think that the difference this year between all the major conferences is much smaller than in years past. SEC is still at the top, no doubt, but the gap between them and the other conferences isn't as wide as last year.

To me, it's never been a wide gap. It's all about the style of play. We play a more run-based offense up here & gear up to stop the run. This style is indicative of the climate we live in. You don't look too fast in the snow--know what I mean???
These things change once we get to bowl games. Then you see that we actually go down south & out west recruiting for a reason. There are actual fast guys on our team.
The quandrant then becomes--what gameplan is in place?? Lloyd Carr hasn't been able to adjust to the fact that he's in a good climate & to let these guys loose....until his last game--go figure...
