Just a week after the utterly one-sided 58-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Arizona Cardinals rejuvenated their spirits with a 38-10 blowout against the Detroit Lions, ending a nine-game slide on Sunday.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was picked three times with the Arizona Cardinals retuning two of them for score setting up a touchdown with the other. Safety Rashad Johnson also retuned a 53 yard interception for a touchdown to lead the Arizona Cardinals by 21 points in the second quarter. An interception by Detroit Lions quarterback Patrick Peterson set the Arizona Cardinals up for another scoring attempt while a turnover on a pun set the Cardinals for an additional touchdown,
Despite the disappointment overshadowing Detroit Lions game Sunday, cornerback Calvin Johnson provided a brief moment of optimism, tying his record for seven consecutive games of at least 100 receiving yards. Calvin Johnson made 10 receptions for 121 yards Sunday and requires only `182 yards to beak Jerry Rice’s single-season record.
Otherwise the Detroit Lions season simply turned from bad to worse, with coach Jim Schwartz claiming he was mad over Sunday’s performance.
"This team, the Cardinals, they lost a game last week because of turnovers, because of eight turnovers," stated Jim Schwartz. "We went into the game wanting to take care of the football, wanting to establish the run. We did a poor job of both of those."
Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells had 5, 1 ad 31 touchdown runs.
The Arizona Cardinals scored the first three touchdowns of the game in the second quarter Sunday.
"There was a lot of talk about if our team had quit," stated Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt. "When it was 7-0 (Detroit) and we were punting the ball there, I didn't see any quit in our guys."
On that punt, return specialist Stefan Logan attempted to make an easy catch but lost footing in a collision with teammate who was trying to block Detroit Lions’ Michael Adams, who ran the ball down the Detroit Lions’ 5 yard line with Beanie Wells scoring on the next play to tie score 7-7 late in first half.
The Detroit Lions lost ground due to a pair of false start penalties until Matthew Stafford lost Rashad Johnson and made an interception, returning 29-yards to the Detroit Lions’ 3-yard line. Two plays down the Detroit Lions held a double margin lead (14-7) after Beanie Wells scored from the 1-yard line.
With 30 seconds left in the half, Rashad Johnson intercepted Matthew Stafford on a pass to Tony Scheffler, running all the way down from the Detroit Lions’ 43-year line on third-and-15 to bump the score to 21-7. The Atlanta Falcons continued down a dominating stretch with a 51-yard field goal by Jay Feely in the third quarter, until Jason Hanson’s 41-yarder cut the lead to 24-10.
A 30-yard pass to Calvin Johnson highlighted a drive that posed the Detroit Lions for cutting the lead with a touchdown in the final quarter. But following a delay of game penalty negated a TD pass, and picking-up fourth-and-2 from their 4-yard line Matthew Stafford hooked Greg Toler in the end zone who outran blocker the down the field for 31-10 lead with 5:07 remaining.
The Arizona Cardinals took possession after the Detroit Lions had given the ball up on downs to complete a final 31-yard rushing touchdown.
Although the Arizona Cardinals offense amassed just 196 yards, they accumulated most single-game points this season.
