Arizona Cardinals third-year running back Ryan Williams spent part of Sunday’s practice on the sidelines, watching the rest of the team workout, while keeping his right knee heavily wrapped with an ice pack, according to multiple reports.

Williams was a participant earlier in the training camp session before tweaking his knee. There was immediately no word from the Cardinals on what might be wrong with Williams’ knee or the seriousness of the injury. But Arizona Republic’s Bob McManaman reported from camp that Williams “doesn’t appear to be liming much at all.”

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians is expected to address any injury situations on Monday, after the team’s walk-through session at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

It not uncommon for players to takeoff short intervals during practices to rest or catch a breath. But why Williams was rendered to spectatorship towards the later part of the practice remains unclear. However, any missed time during training camp could draw significant notice after Williams’ first two seasons in NFL ended early due to injuries.

The 23-year-old Williams sat out his entire rookie season after suffering a right knee injury during the 2011 preseason. Last season, Williams only appeared in five games before his 2012 campaign ended early die to shoulder injury.

The Cardinals added free agent Rashard Mendenhall to their running backs group this offseason, and he is presumed favorite to get most of the carries this season. Mendenhall is familiar with Arians, who was his former offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.  The 26-year-old Mendenhall rushed for 3,549 yards and 29 touchdowns, while also recording 77 receptions for 661 yards and two scores during his five-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Sunday marked the first time this offseason the Cardinals practice with full pads.
Veteran guard Daryn Colledge took a hit to the right leg during scrimmage drills Sunday and was replaced by Paul Fanaika on the first-team offense. Tight end Jeff King and linebacker Daryl Washington also sat out Sunday’s practice but the team did not release any injury update regarding the two players. However, they are not expected to miss significant time in training camp.
