Even though the Olympics happen once every four years, winning a gold medal is a huge deal. And if you win a gold (or golds) in certain sports, like track and field or swimming, you can turn that into serious endorsement money or other various opportunities.
I mean, if Michael Phelps wins 8 gold medals in these Olympics, he'll be remembered not just as one of the greatest Olympic athletes ever, but one the greatest athletes ever in all of sports history. And in addition to that, people will throw money at him and treat him like a huge deal.
That's all well and good, but it can occasionally work against you. Especially if you get a swollen head and start to believe you can do things that you honestly have no business doing - like movie stars who suddenly think they can sing.
Let's take Carl Lewis, for example. Lewis is one of the greatest athletes of the modern era and an Olympic hero for generations, but he was such a star in the 80s and 90s that no one ever said to him "Carl, whatever you do, do not make a music video." So Carl did, and this was the result. What a nightmare.
So, Olympic athletes, keep that in mind. Whatever you do, don't let success go to your head. And if anyone asks if you want to appear in a music video while wearing spandex, say no. You'll definitely thank yourself later.
