Carmelo Anthony's Level Of Impairment During His Arrest Described As "Extreme," Extremely Drunk.
by 100%InjuryRate 100%InjuryRate
4/16/08

While we still have to wait for the blood test to find just how drunk Carmelo Anthony was when he pulled over by cops earlier this week, it now appears he was pretty smashed.

Melo's level of impairment was described as 'extreme' by investigating officers, which is never a good thing.

According to the report, when Anthony was pulled over he, "had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, blood shot watery eyes, speech was mumbling slurred."

In addition to that, those involved in the case said Anthony badly failed every roadside sobriety test that was administered. When he was asked to take nine steps, heel to toe, then turn around and take another nine steps, he forgot to perform the second half of the maneuver, according to police. When asked to stand on one leg, he swayed, put his foot down and "gave up," telling an officer, "I don't have good balance."

I'm just praying this thing winds up on YouTube.

But this may be the best line ever. When police were interviewing Anthony, they asked him if he knew where he was:
"No clue," he told police.
Clearly this was a man who should have been driving.

On top of all this, it's also come out that Melo got preferential treatment from the police. Typically, DUI suspects are taken to a detox facility, or picked up by a sober, responsible third party. But because Melo's wife wouldn't pick him up, the police drove him to the Ritz Carlton in downtown Denver where she was staying. Shockingly, most DUI suspects don't get that kind of service.

Anyway, I'm not going to go off on any kind of rant here about how Melo is an idiot (I already did that anyway) or how you shouldn't drink and drive or whatever.

No, I'm going to learn from this episode. And what I've learned is this: If you're rich and famous, you can get away with anything.

Which I sort of knew already, but it's always nice to get a reminder.

The "No clue" is sad, hilarious, and terrifying all rolled together.

Unless the blood test is magically lost, if it comes up wrong, Stern will suspend him.  I just hope it's next season and not during the second round of the playoffs.

I fail to see what Carmelo has "gotten away with", as you claim.  He's been arrested and charged.  All he got was a ride home, which is something police will sometimes do when suspects are not belligerent or uncooperative.

And the words "had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, blood shot watery eyes, speech was mumbling slurred" are contained in most reports; it is a familiar police mantra and often is not supported by the blood test result.

His level of drunkenness may have been extreme but let's wait for a certified test result before we judge.

I was perfectly cooperative and they wouldn't give me a ride home!

I guess it just wasn't your night.  It does sometimes happen.
