Cech insists Chelsea are favorites for Premier League title
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech insists his team has got what it takes to stay at the top of the Premier League table. The Czech shot-stopper said that Jose Mourinho’s squad had the talent uphold their top position till the end of the season.
Cech stated that being on top of the table had added no additional pressure to his side, in fact the Blues were thriving on success they had acquired. Chelsea heads into this week with a seven-point gap at the top of table, but things could change quickly for them.
All of the top-four teams are in contention for the Premier League title and since they all have games in hands they could shrink the gap between them and Chelsea. Manchester City even have chance to topple Chelsea from the top spot since they have three games in hand.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists his team should not be considered as favorites in the title race, although the race for the Premier League crown appears to be between the his team and Manchester City. Mourinho insists Chelsea’s main objective is to acquire a top-four finish this season.
In stark contrast to the beliefs of his boss, Cech insists Chelsea are leading contenders for the Premier League title and are ready to lift the trophy once again.
“In the past, it's fair to say we've not let leads slip,”Cech was quoted in the Daily Mirror. “Of course, this is a different team and a different scenario, a different season, so it is hard to compare. But we know how to play under pressure until the last game.
“In recent years, we have been in these situations, so if we can do it again, that is what we will try to do. If you're top, you have to keep winning to stay top. If you're second, you need to keep winning to have a chance and you don't have things in your hands. So the pressure is the same.”
Cech believes it is harder to be the team which is second in the race since it has to wait for the top team to drop points. However, the Czech Republic international insists that the top three teams face the same amount of pressure when running for the same goal.
Chelsea are lined for a tough week as they are scheduled to host Galatasaray in the Champions League three days after their trip to Villa Park to play against Aston Villa in the Premier League. Four days after their Champions League campaign, Chelsea will host the London derby with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
