Game 4 of the NBA Finals sure looked over after the first half, the first quarter even. The Lakers raced out to a 21 point lead after the first quarter, and the lead was still 18 at halftime. Halfway through the third quarter, the Lakers still led by 20. Book it and start looking forward to Game 5, right? Not quite.Suddenly though, the Celtics got red hot at the same time the Lakers became ice cold. In the early goings, the Lakers supporting cast (i.e. everyone but Kobe) had the hot hand, allowing LA to grab that huge lead despite Kobe shooting poorly (he ended up shooting 6-19). Starting in the second half though, the entire Lakers team fell prey to the Celtics stifling defense. The result was a 21-3 run by Boston to end the third quarter and put the Celtics within two.
Boston finally tied it with just over 10 minutes left, and took their first lead of the game with 4:08 left on an Eddie House shot (note to Bill Simmons: House played 25 minutes, Cassell 7). Kobe tried to take it over from there, but the Celtics kept answering from all angles, from KG to Pierce to Posey. After a Gasol dunk made it 94-91 with 40 seconds to go, Boston milked the clock before Paul Pierce blew by The Machine for an uncontested lay-up. That essentially ended it, and it was definitely over after the Lakers final possession, which could only be described as a farce.
The Celtics now lead the series 3-1. No team has ever comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. Even if the Lakers win Game 5, they would have to win on the road twice. Plus, this loss has to be demoralizing. I feel comfortable pulling a Shanoff and declaring this series over.
Game 5 is Sunday night. Do you give the Lakers any chance of coming back?
