Champs Sports Bowl and Alamo Bowl

Storied programs take center stage early [Thursday Bowl Game open thread]

Thursday's bowl games are juicy and ripe with story lines. You have two of college football's most storied programs of all time facing off--Notre Dame and Florida State. For a change, they aren't squaring off in the Orange Bowl or another BCS game, but instead in the world-famous Champs Sports Bowl. Then, this evening you have Heisman Trophy-winner Robert Griffin III playing perhaps his final collegiate game against the defensively-challenged Washington Huskies.

Florida State and Notre Dame both have to be disappointed to be playing so early in bowl season. The Seminoles especially, as they were a top-five team in the preseason. But injuries and a sputtering offense left them destined for the Champs Sports Bowl instead of BCS glory.

For Notre Dame the expectations never wane, but the Fightin' Irish often disappoints, this year included. They too struggled on offense, using three quarterbacks--which is never a good thing.

In the nightcap, the Baylor Bears and Washington Huskies square off in what appears to be one of the more lopsided bowl match ups. Baylor is a top-15 team that can be considered a BCS snub. It has the Heisman Trophy winner, is playing against a defense that can't stop the pass and did I mention they are playing in Texas?

But Washington tends to be a good bowl team. Last season the Huskies got smoked by Nebraska during the regular season only to come back and beat the Huskers in the Holiday Bowl. So who knows.

Insane. What a crazy game.

And the craziest part was that Washington QB Keith Price looked pretty much as good as RG3, if not better. He definitely improved his draft stock a LOT for next year. 4 passing TD and 3 rushing... dude was impressive. Outplayed RG3, for whatever that's worth.

And I thought the Illinois/Michigan game from last season was insane.  This game is going to set all kinds of FBS records

Florida State is starting 4 freshman offensive lineman and so far, the Irish are having their way with them.
