Storied programs take center stage early [Thursday Bowl Game open thread]
Florida State and Notre Dame both have to be disappointed to be playing so early in bowl season. The Seminoles especially, as they were a top-five team in the preseason. But injuries and a sputtering offense left them destined for the Champs Sports Bowl instead of BCS glory.
For Notre Dame the expectations never wane, but the Fightin' Irish often disappoints, this year included. They too struggled on offense, using three quarterbacks--which is never a good thing.
In the nightcap, the Baylor Bears and Washington Huskies square off in what appears to be one of the more lopsided bowl match ups. Baylor is a top-15 team that can be considered a BCS snub. It has the Heisman Trophy winner, is playing against a defense that can't stop the pass and did I mention they are playing in Texas?
But Washington tends to be a good bowl team. Last season the Huskies got smoked by Nebraska during the regular season only to come back and beat the Huskers in the Holiday Bowl. So who knows.
