Chargers sign RPI quarterback Mike Hermann as UDFA
Coming out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a Division III school in Troy, N.Y., Mike Hermann is considered a low-key signing but it may still be interesting keeping an eye on the player this offseason.
The 6-5, 250-pound Mike Hermann led the Engineers in rushing yardage over the past three seasons and ranks among the top three players for every quarterback category in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute history. Mike Herman is also a two-time Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year as well as a first-team all-conference quarterback.
As a senior, Mike Hermann completed 60.1 percent (178-of296) of his passes while throwing for 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Mike Herman also ran for 510 yards and seven touchdowns on 107 attempts in 2012. As a junior, Mike Herman recorded 435 carries for 1,935 yards and 29 scores, including 15 rushing touchdowns in 2011.
Over his combined four season career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Mike Hermann completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 7,177 yards with 57 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.
Mike Hermann was also expected to work out for the Oakland Raiders, before signed with the San Diego Chargers.
"I am obviously grateful to the Chargers for this opportunity,” said Mike Hermann. “To have an offer to join the organization with a contract is a dream come true.”
“I have had the chance to get to know some of their staff and could not be more impressed. I do want to thank the Raiders,” added Mike Hermann, “not only for the chance they provided but for their understanding of my prospects with San Diego."
Mike Hermann will be the fourth quarterback on the depth chart, right behind seventh-round pick Brad Sorensen, when he joins the San Diego Chargers’ rookie minicamp next week.
Veterans Philip Rivers and Charlie Whitehust remain the San Diego Chargers’ top quarterbacks on the depth chart.
