Chargers sign backup DE Jarius Wynn
Jarius Wynn spent the 2012 season with the Tennessee Titans after signing with the team in early November. Last season, Jarius Wynn appeared in seven games for the Tennessee Titans, while finishing with six tackles, two sacks and one pass deflected.
Before that, Jarius Wynn played three seasons for the Green Bay Packers, who picked him out of Georgia in the sixth-round of the 2009 NFL draft. Jarius Wynn appeared in 36 games with four starts for the Green Bay Packers, combining 28 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He has his best season in 2011, playing all 16 games including four starts to register career-highs with 19 tackles and three sacks. Jarius Young was released by the Green Bay Packers in August of last year, before being picked up by the Tennessee Titans.
Over his four-year career with the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans, Jarius Wynn has mostly remained a backup and is expected to serve in the same capacity for the San Diego Chargers. The team already has its starters picked out but still needs capable bodies as insurance or to fill-in on the defensive line in case of injuries.
While it may not seem like a big signing, Jarius Wynn has experience in the 3-4 defensive scheme, during his time in Green Bay. Additionally, Jarius Wynn is still young at 26 and was likely an inexpensive option. Jarius Wynn was also part of the Green Bay Packers’ 2010-11 Super Bowl team.
The San Diego Chargers lost three veterans on the defensive line over the past month. Nose tackle Antonio Gray was released in as salary cap move last month and signed by the New York Jets a few days later. Nose tackle Aubarayo Franklin and defensive end Vaughn Martin, who became free agents on the new league year, signed with the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins respectively.
Fourth-year pro Cam Thomas is the currently the only nose tackle on the roster, while Jarius Wynn joins Corey Liuget, Kendall Reyes, Logan Harrell and Damik Scafe as the other defensive ends remaining with the San Diego Chargers.
Jarius Wynn could still face additional competition for the positions on the defensive line as the San Diego Chargers are likely to look at the free agent market or draft for a help at the positions.
