Charlie Weis can do no wrong. In fact, he has had a winning record in every season of his career, whether as a coach, coordinator or assistant. That, of course, isn't true. It's not even remotely close to the truth. Weis led Notre Dame to an abysmal 3-9 record in 2007, was an assistant for the New York Giants in 1992 when they went 6-10 in 1992, was an assistant for the Patriots when they had losing seasons in 1993 and 1995, and was a coordinator for the Pats when they went 5-11 in 2000.
Somehow, though, that doesn't show up in the Notre Dame Media Guide.
Any time that Weis was remotely involved in a winning season, they listed it in the Media Guide. But the losing ones are nowhere to be found.
Why does Notre Dame insist on disregarding the past failures and only focusing on the successes of their coach? Is it because they are trying to concentrate on the positive? Or are they just trying to cover up any blemish on his record, in an attempt to whitewash his career and make them look as good as possible?
Charlie Weis has a stellar overall record as a coach and coordinator. Despite a lot of criticism over the job he has done at Notre Dame, he still has a 29-21 overall record, and has recruited very well, according to many of the recruiting rankings during his era.
This will be his first year played with entirely players that he recruited. He might do well, he might not. But there's no reason for the Irish to try to cover up any failures that he may have had. It's embarrassing and quite frankly, pathetic. Notre Dame needs to shake their feeling that they are above the rest of the country, and treat themselves honestly and with a sense of reality. That's what it will take for them to acheive greatness once again.
