Cheating in NASCAR

It completely amazes me when a Race Team is having a successful season, the first thing said is “They’re a bunch of cheaters!” Cheating or I should say, bending the rules, living in the gray area, has been a huge part of NASCAR since the inception. It has always been the perception, “If it is not in the rule book, it must be OK”. Rules have been bent by many teams, many Crew Chiefs, many drivers, and will until the end of time or racing, whichever comes first. The old adage was and still is, “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying … if you get caught, you ain’t trying hard enough”. Some of the best Crew Chiefs in the history of NASCAR have been accused of this practice. Why? Because, if they are that much better than anyone else, they are cheating. You never hear, “Those guys are good, they are much more technically savvy than we are” or, “They are really on top of their game!” No, hardly ever. Why? Because, we as humans find defeat hard to take. It is always easier to make an excuse than it is to find a solution. It is easier to cast blame than to try harder and find that one little thing to improve on, to make us better or equal.

For once, do some soul searching. Enjoy the competition. Pull for your favorite, but, appreciate the sacrifices and hard work the competition has put forth to get them there. Enjoy the race, forget the controversy, eat a hot dog, and drink your beverage of choice. Enjoy the fact you have an opportunity to watch some of the most gifted and talented race car drivers in the world. Feel sad your team lost, if you don’t, you have no emotion in your life. Be thankful you had good entertainment, hopefully a safe race, and know that next week your favorite has a new opportunity for success.

Now before the naysayers start, yes I do have my favorite drivers. But, first and foremost, I am a race fan and enjoy the competitive spirit of the sport. If my favorite driver does not win, the sun will still come up tomorrow. If not, it really doesn’t matter does it?

You do have a point from the fan standpoint. The whining and complaining when their drivers lose is just ridiculous. However, the cheating issue is a big deal. Back in the day, the cars were so much different. Today a lot of those rules exist for safety purposes. When teams go and "misunderstand" the text of the rule book, they put not only their team in danger but every other team and driver out there as well. We don't know a whole lot about the car of tomorrow yet and deviating from established standards (like making the car lighter with thinner sheet metal) is worthy of the punishments handed out.

Very well said Sr. The only thing I would like to add to the bending the rules aspect of it is this, if it is determined that said team was found guilty of cheating, then the punishment should fit the crime, unfortunately in this day and age any punishment that NASCAR hands down, there is still a way for the suspended parties to communictae with their teams even if they aren't at the track, that is the only thing that I would like to see changed as far as the penalties that are handed down, and realistically if they are working in the grey areas it really isn't cheating, that team just did their homework and was a step ahead of NASCAR, and if that is the case, they shouldn't be punished for that, but if it is obvious cheating outside the rule book and grey areas, the punishment should be harsh, JMO

I agree, but I think NASCAR's standpoint is to make an example out of exploiting the gray area too much. It seems like they go overboard to teach the rest of the field a lesson about doing it, but of course everyone is going to anyways lol.

You say it so well Senior, Sometimes I feel like I'm watching an updated version of  IROC....I miss "My Nascar Of Old"...my Daddy never watched...LOL  That being said, I gotta agree with you Michael, if you get caught and are suspended for how ever long you should be outta the loop while they are at the track, back at the shop is a different story.  The bending of the rules has been going on since racing began and I for one would hate to see what would happen if that stopped....

Very few fines and suspensions are levied for actual 'cheating'.  What most people don't realize is that the Nascar Rulebook is a 'reactionary' rule book.  In an effort to 'create parity', which is laughable really given the current domination by super-teams, Nascar writes or ammends a Rule when it finds something it doesn't like.  You can be guilty of 'cheating' even if no rule exists against what you actually did.  They will simply ammend the Rule book to cover it next time!

The most brilliant rule in all of sports has to be 12-4-A.  It's a blanket rule and whatever it is you did- you're automatically 'guilty' of it.
