Chelsea close in on Newcastle United striker Demba Ba
Chelsea is stepping closer to finalizing a transfer deal with Newcastle United for the services of their coveted striker Demba Ba. The Senegal international was benched in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers, which means Newcastle United are wary of getting him injured,
Officials from Newcastle United have confirmed Chelsea have met the £7 million release clause for Demba Ba. Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez has already declared that Fernando Torres should be prepared for a bench role as new transfers or other players from the squad might be given a chance over him.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Chelsea Football Club has made an official offer for Demba Ba which has triggered the release clause in the player’s contract,” a statement released on the official Newcastle United website read on Wednesday.
“The club has given the player permission to speak to Chelsea FC and therefore he will not be included in the squad for tonight’s game against Everton.”
New transfers are expected to roll in at Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window. The probability of Chelsea signing in a new striker is quite high. In the aftermath of the departure of Daniel Sturridge there is only one striker left in the Chelsea squad, and yes he is Fernando Torres.
Rafael Benitez feels he might need to demote Fernando Torres to the bench in order to set the attack right. Fernando Torres has started in every league game for Chelsea this season. However, the 28-year-old striker has failed to reach his paramount form. The Spaniard has so far scored only seven goals. Fernando Torres’ lack lustrous form against Queens Park Rangers will be another reason to bench.
“We are trying to manage the team so when I can change Fernando I will do it,” Rafael Benitez told reporters. “We will try to manage him and hopefully we can do things properly. He wants the team winning games and he understands that is the way so he will accept this.”
“All of the players want to play every game but I think they can understand now that if we want to achieve something important then we have to use the squad. They know that is the way.”
Chelsea are expected to launch a bid for Demba Ba this weekend. Rife speculation suggests Chelsea will have shell out as much £10 million for Demba Ba.
