Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has refused to talk about whether he will come up with a new offer for Manchester United’s star striker Wayne Rooney during the January transfer window. Mourinho’s desire to lure Rooney to Chelsea is no secret. The Stamford Bridge boss attempted to sign in the England international during the summer transfer window, but his attempt was met by hostility from the Manchester United camp.
Mourinho jumped at the opportunity to bring Rooney to Stamford Bridge during the summers after he declared desire to leave the club following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United’s new manager David Moyes refused to sell him and regained the striker’s confidence in the club.
Rooney has been at the heart of what’s happening good for Manchester United this season – and there isn’t a lot of good going around for them, which has made Rooney unsettled once again. The Premier League champions are currently eighth on the Premier League table, 10 points from the top and 12 from the relegation zone.
Rooney is already in the final 18 months of his contract with Manchester United. The player and the club have sat at the table to discuss a new contract but no conclusive progress has been made. If the contract isn’t renewed Manchester United will be tempted to sell the striker this fall or summer to grab the price instead of risk losing him for free.
Keeping everyone guessing Mourinho said on the weekend that “Who links us with him?” The Chelsea boss insists the club is not looking for a new striker, but would be ready to spend good money if an opportunity arose.
“The market opens in January, but as I was saying, I don't think we will be there, buying or selling,” Moourinho said. “If something happens it will happen [with] one player because the occasion was very good, because something happened that push us in that direction, but we are not smelling the market and waiting desperately for Jan. 1 to do something.
“We always thought to try the best with this team and wait for the right moment to improve the squad and be strong.”
Mourinho further stated that currently he was happy with Chelsea’s striking options; Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o, although the trio hadn’t made an impact in the attack yet.
