Fernando Torres hailed Chelsea after an electrifying 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Spanish striker admits the victory turned sweeter when he became the cult-hero with a late winner following a defensive blunder from Manchester City.
Manchester City defender Matija Nastasic and goalkeeper Joe Hart were left ruing over miscommunication of who should clear the ball. In the end Nastasic headed the ball over Hart, which left Torres free to score the winner.
“When you win a game like this against a great team like Manchester City in the last minutes of the game it feels much better,” Torres told Sky Sports.
“I think 1-1 was not right for the game. I think we controlled most of the game and we had more chances in the first half. At end we won a game we decided to win. We are happy because it is our first win against a contender for the Premier League.”
Torres was found in deadly form against Manchester City on Sunday night. The striker seems to have renewed form under Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Apart from scoring the winner, Torres was also responsible for setting up Andre Schurrle for the opener, which later got equalized with a stunning goal from Sergio Aguero.
Chelsea played well till the final minute, but the game was actually decided by Manchester City’s defensive failure.
“You never know which ball can be the most important in the game,” Torres said. “A long ball just looking not too complicated, but not the best understanding between the defender and the keeper -- you win the game in that action.”
Torres could have easily scored a hat-trick in against Manchester City had he not squandered to easy opportunities to score. Torres struck the woodwork and shot over the crossbar when the score stood at 1-0.
“I was unlucky to miss the chance that I missed in the first half. I thought I was offside -- I should have stayed more calm,” Torres added. “I missed the chance but then in the next action I got the assist for Andre and then I hit the post.
“I'm really happy for the team and my performance. The team is showing it is improving and that is very positive.”
