Chelsea leads the race for Atletico Madrid’s £50 million Radamel Falcao
Atletico Madrid insists they are in no need of selling of Radamel Falcao, but that won’t stop Chelsea from pursuing the Colombian forward. The 26-year-old striker, who attracted interest from top notch European clubs this summer, has been Chelsea’s transfer target for over a year now.
In spite of their well known financial troubles, Atletico Madrid’s general manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin told reporters that the Spanish club had no intentions of losing coveted asset. His statements arrive a few days after Radamel Falcao opened himself to an away move, but insured he would stay at Atletico Madrid till the end of the season.
According to ESPN, Chelsea will step in with a big move for Radamel Falcao in the summer of 2013. The Champions League winners are looking to buff up their attack by bringing in a striker. Radamel Falcao’s desire to secure a move to Chelsea is no secret. Just last weekend, Radamel Falcao admitted in the Times that he could move to the English Premier League.
“England? One day I could do,” Radamel Falcao said. “It is a game I have watched for a long time and one day I would like to sample it.
“I used to watch it on television when I was a kid. Players like Roy Keane, Eric Cantona [Chelsea legend Gianfranco] Zola. But the one I supported was [Faustino] Asprilla, when he was at Newcastle. I think I could adapt to England. I think I could score goals.”
Radamel Falcao has a £50 million release clause in his contract with Atletico Madrid. So, only a handful of clubs can step forth with a bid. Chelsea and Manchester City are the front runners of course, but Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Barcelona are expected to join the fray.
The former Porto forward has established himself as one of the deadliest strikers in the world. Presently, Radamel Falcao is tied on eight goals with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in La Liga this season.
Chelsea became obsessed about signing in Radamel Falcao after their Super Cup defeat against Atletico Madrid earlier this year. Radamel Falcao scored a brilliant first half hat-trick to help his team win the encounter 4-1.
Radamel Falcao is expected to be the long term replacement of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba. The Colombia international will prove to be a huge signing for Chelsea as Fernando Torres has failed to make an impact in London.
