Chelsea officially sign in Newcastle United striker Demba Ba
Newcastle United striker Demba Ba has been signed in by Chelsea. The official confirmation of the transfer move has been delivered by representatives of both clubs. Reportedly, Demba Ba has agreed to a three and a half year contract with Chelsea.
Chelsea launched an official bid for Demba Ba on Wednesday after triggering his £7 million release clause last weekend. The 27-year-old striker was left out of Newcastle United’s matchup against Everton because of the transfer saga.
Reports suggest preliminary negotiations between representatives of both clubs and the player were initiated last weekend after Chelsea tabled a bid for Demba Ba. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has also confirmed Demba Ba’s departure.
Demba Ba, who joined Newcastle United from West Ham United via free transfer in the summer of 2011, has attracted a lot of attention by scoring 13 goals in 20 Premier League games.
“It's done. He will go to Chelsea with our blessing,” Alan Pardew told Sky Sports. “He has done fantastic for us and it's not a bad thing, all the uncertainty is now done and we can move on.
“The ball was always in Demba's court. But this club is bigger than any player for sure.”
A day before Alan Pardew’s press release Newcastle United’s official website released a statement confirming Chelsea’s interest in Demba Ba.
“Newcastle United can confirm that Chelsea Football Club has made an official offer for Demba Ba which has triggered the release clause in the player’s contract. The club has given the player permission to speak to Chelsea and therefore he will not be included in the squad for tonight’s (Wednesday’s) game against Everton,” the statement on Newcastle United’s site read.
The arrival of a fresh pair of legs at Chelsea was quite predictable. The interim manager Rafael Benitez had already acknowledged that Chelsea was in dire need of a new striker. Chelsea were left with Fernando Torres as their sole striker following the departure of Daniel Sturridge.
