Chelsea are preparing an £18 million bid for Real Madrid star Fabio Coentrao. Surprisingly, Real Madrid are ready to hear offers for their in-form left-wing player. Reports suggest the Spanish club has placed £18 million price tag on the Portuguese, who has already drawn attention from Chelsea.
According to the Italian media outlet TuttoMercato, both clubs are ready to engage into negotiations for Fabio Coentrao. The 25-year-old Portugal international was brought to Bernabeu by manager Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2011. Fabio Coentrao signed a six-year-contract with Real Madrid, while they paid €30 million in transfer fees to Benfica.
Fabio Coentrao appeared in 33 games during his first season and in 23 games during his second at Real Madrid. With Marcelo cementing his place at the left-back position and Angel di Maria proving he is the best option on the left wing, Fabio Coentrao has received fewer opportunities to play this season.
An injury to Marcelo brought Fabio Coentrao back into Real Madrid’s first team. The Portuguese immediately showed caliber to contend for regular first-team action, but it appears as if he is still considered surplus at Real Madrid.
Chelsea and Liverpool are showing keen interest in signing Fabio Coentrao. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich believes the Portuguese can be a long term replacement for England international Ashley Cole.
On the other hand, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to add Fabio Coentrao as a wing-back in his squad. Liverpool have Jose Enrique as first-choice for the left-back position, but the left part of their midfield and attack is still pretty vacant. Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has been experimenting with Daniel Sturridge, Suso, Raheem Sterling and Stewart Downing on the left wing, but none of them have been able to put their names on the position permanently.
Fabio Coentrao has also capped 13 times for Portugal with a goal and two assists to his name.
