Chelsea show interest in £8.2m Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas
Chelsea are linked with a move for the Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas. The Champions League winning side are ready to trigger the £8.2 million release clause in Iago Aspas’ contract during the January transfer window.
The in-form Spanish striker has been an object of interest in the football market this winter. A number of La Liga and Premier League clubs have also questioned Celta Vigo about the services of Iago Aspas.
So far it has been confirmed that Iago Aspas will be sold to any club that invokes the €10 million release clause in Iago Aspas’ contract with Celta Vigo. Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are closely monitoring Chelsea’s transfer progress.
In spite of signing in Demba Ba from Newcastle United just a couple of days ago, Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez is keen on adding attacking reinforcements at Stamford Bridge before the end of the winter transfer window.
Reports flying in from Spain indicate that a number of La Liga clubs are also tracking down the 25-year-old striker. After scoring 23 goals in 37 appearances in Segunda Division last season, Iago Aspas has continued with his goal-scoring form by netting eights goals in 19 La Liga appearances.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is keen on bringing in some quality players at the end of the season. Given that Chelsea can no longer expect Fernando Torres to regain his former form and Demba Ba can only provide support, the Blues are in need of adding reinforcements desperately.
Fernando Torres scored seven goals in six games when Rafael Benitez arrived at the helm of Chelsea. However, the former Liverpool striker has failed to score in the past five games. The Spain international has been finding the back of the net more regularly as of late, but he cannot be considered the featured striker of Chelsea.
Demba Ba has been in spectacular form for Newcastle United over the past year and a half. The Senegal international scored on his debut for Chelsea, but the African Cup of Nations has driven him away almost immediately after his arrival.
Rafael Benitez has been complaining about lack of striking options upfront, therefore the arrival of Iago Aspas should be a welcome sight at Stamford Bridge.
