China Will Impose Its Will On You, Whether You Like It Or Not
READ MORE:
Freedom of speech is an interesting little notion we have here in the Western world. Basically, you have the right to express your beliefs, regardless of how bizarre they are.

But China don't roll like that, son. And now they're starting to impose their will on other countries.

It's just been revealed that British Olympic officials are going to force their athletes to sign a contract in which they agree not to speak out about China's less-than-awesome human rights record – otherwise the athletes face being banned from travelling to Beijing.

The controversial clause has been inserted into athletes' contracts and forbids them from making any political comment about countries staging the Olympic Games - you know, just in case some athlete is really mad about the over-hunting of raccoons in Vancouver. The clause is contained in a 32-page document that will be presented to all those who reach the qualifying standard and are chosen for the team.

From the moment they sign up, the athletes – likely to include the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips – will effectively be gagged from commenting on China's politics, human rights abuses or occupation of Tibet.

Interestingly, the UK isn't even the first country to sign up for this bizarre plan. New Zealand and Belgium have also banned their athletes from giving political opinions while competing at the Games.

So let's see, with only six months to go until the Olympics, we have the Chinese shooting missiles into the sky to stop rain, toilets popping up from out of the ground, forced cheering, and now this.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say this Olympics has an awful lot in common with the 1936 Nazi Olympics. Just with a lot less missile launching.

I don't mind this at all.  The Olympics are about competition, not politics.  I hate it when athletes (and other entertainers, for that matter) use their competitions and popularity as a soap box to spout off about their own personal beliefs.

So why is it when American leaders try to say, "You're with us or you're against us..." it's bad, but when the Chinese pull this BS, it's suddenly ok?  This is bogus, and the IOC should threaten to never allow any Olympics in China until this changes.

Don't be a drama queen.  They don't care if you don't agree with what they do, they just don't want the Olympics to be about bashing their country.  Athletes can come back here and get on their soapbox if they want, but China is doing better than most want to admit and I applaud the Olympics as a way to showcase that.  American athletes need an ego check in the worst way.
Sorry, I don't believe the ends justify the means.
The Chinese have major problems (both governmental and societal), and I'm supposed to believe that enforcing Chinese "ideals" on other, free-countries' athletes is a good thing?  I'm not buying it.

Of course you're not buying it because you made it up.  They're imposing nothing.  They just don't want other countries athletes criticizing their ideals.  If an athlete from abroad was critical of American policy while at an Olympics here, you'd clean your musket and light your torch and head out for a bloodthirsty bounty hunt.  Don't be hypocritical.
Sir, don't pretend like you'd have any idea what I'd do if an athlete talked s**t about the U.S.  They're in the U.S. and they can say whatever the hell that they want to.
The Chinese obviously know they're doing something wrong/awful to their own people, or they wouldn't feel the need to try and shut people up before they even landed there.  I've never heard of such a thing as the Chinese are proposing (even in Berlin in 1936 or Moscow in 1980)
