Every year a couple players jump out to hot starts and tease us with thoughts of .400 in early May. We discuss the chances and then by the start of June they fade back to the still very impressive mid .300's. Well, it's nearly June and Chipper Jones is now batting .420 after a 2-for-4 performance Thursday night. Is it too early to start bringing up talk of Ted Williams? (I know the answer is yes)
The dude's as locked in as anyone has been over the last 10 years. Tex agrees:
"The guy's hitting .420, he's going to get walked," said Teixeira, the beneficiary of Jones' free passes. "I've never seen somebody this locked in for two months to start a season."As we well know, the last time anyone hit over .400 was Ted Williams in 1941. From 1900-1941 only 13 players managed to break the barrier.
Odds are that Chipper will eventually get into a slump, or more likely, become hit with his yearly injury and attempt to unsuccessfully play through. But here's to one of the most underrated players of our generation giving it a good run.
Braves 8, Brewers 1
What is this, a winning streak? It's all about baby steps in New York and three wins in a row is sweet success for Willie Randolph. David Wright needs to keep hitting like he did last night - two home runs and four runs batted in. Our man Tatis got the start after his clutch hit Wednesday but went 0-for-4. Keep him in, Willie! Mets 8, Dodgers 4
Big Unit Ties Big Liar Randy Johnson struck out nine batters to draw even with Roger Clemens on the all-time strikeout list. Amazingly, both are still 1,000+ K's away from Nolan Ryan. The good news for the Giants is that a) Barry Zito didn't pick up the loss and b) Randy Winn's solo shot in the 9th completed a three game sweep of the DBacks. Yes, San Fran sweep Arizona. Chew on that one. Giants 4, DBacks 3
