Chipper Jones thinks umpiring in Major League Baseball is at an all-time low. Just about anyone who watches the NBA would use the same sentiment for their officials. I'm not so sure these aren't unrelated. Has the officiating truly declined, or has the proliferation of media coverage caused us to more critical? What about the fact that the NFL officials are rarely criticized? Two words: Instant.Replay. Clearly, we don't even want a computer to determine balls and strikes, but just food for thought.
Whether Chipper is right or wrong, last night he might have been right on one atrocious strike call, he has to understand that MLB is the one sport that goes solely on an umpire's perception. Start swinging the bat if you know it's a big strike zone.
Sometimes Chipper reminds me a little of a golfer named Sergio.“It’s a joke,” Chipper Jones said. “I’m tired of it. And baseball can fine me whatever they want. I do not care. Somebody’s got to say something. I’ve got more walks than strikeouts in my career — I know what a strike looks like. You’re going to see frustration from now on as long as the officiating is abysmal. Major League Baseball ought to be ashamed. It’s abysmal. It’s awful. Not all of them but some of them. It’s awful.”
