This falls into their mini-mid-level exception, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com.

They were looking to secure a player at the center position after Dwight Howard did not re-sign and Kaman works within their luxury cap restraints, and won't affect their options for free agents in 2014.

Kaman isn't the best center by a long shot, but he isn't terrible either. It's surprising the Lakers decided to go with someone so old and already recovering from an injury ridden season last year.
